EA Ends Remote Work: A Shift Back to the Office
Electronic Arts is pulling back remote roles, aligning with a trend among big gaming firms.

EA Pushes Buttons on Office Return
Roll the credits on Electronic Arts’ remote work policy. The gaming giant is dialing back its pandemic era flexibility, asking their staff to return to the physical offices at least three days a week. In a corporate email viewed by IGN, CEO Andrew Wilson expressed that in-person collaboration sparks “kinetic energy” vital for creativity and innovation. Sounds like someone misses the office coffee machine banter!
From Remote Control to Office Keyboard
Andrew Wilson isn’t just hitting ‘restart’; EA is booting up a fresh hybrid strategy. Cue Laura Miele, EA Entertainment's president, who laid down the rules in a follow-up email. First up, a 'heads-up' approach: the switch won’t flip overnight. Locations will see a transition period, with at least a three-month heads-up. For folks residing within a cozy 30-mile radius of an EA hub, heads-down in-person work is back on the cards. The message to those further out? Hold tight; you may stick to remote until the company draws you in.
No More At-Home Advantage
Effective immediately: the "Offsite Local" remote roles will gradually exit stage left over the next few years. This change isn’t just a one-off; future remote roles will now require the blessing of EA’s top brass. While some EA employees spin their wheels on the potential of lengthy commutes, childcare logistics, and health issues, others who live farther afield are spinning up maps to calculate the reality of relocation or job continuity.

Game Over for Remote Work?
Be it lockdown lifestyle or post-pandemic work perks, the gaming industry's remote phase was always a bit of a wild card. The pandemic pushed major game studios into a remote-first operation mode, and like a plot twist, they discovered remote work worked. But the tide is turning. EA joins a cast including Rockstar Games, Ubisoft, and Activision Blizzard, each unfurling the “return to office” banner. These moves are not without backlash; employees are voting with their feet, potentially spelling higher turnover for employers as they balance readiness with resistance.
Aside from rearranging desks, EA has also been adjusting its lineup in other ways with recent layoffs affecting hundreds of positions, sharpening focus on their most popular franchises and potentially preparing for a leaner, meaner future workforce.
The message here is as clear as the daylight streaming through those office windows EA wants to fill again: remote work might take a backseat, but the dialogue around it is just heating up.
