India's Tech Layoff Wave Hits

Despite strong revenue growth, Indian tech giants cut thousands of jobs as AI reshapes the workforce landscape.

India's Tech Layoff Wave Hits

India’s tech sector—once considered a reliable path to upward mobility—is now seeing one of its sharpest talent reshuffles in a decade.

Despite solid quarterly earnings, major players like TCS, Infosys, and HCLTech have trimmed headcount, slowed hiring, and ramped up automation across verticals. The cause isn’t falling revenue—it’s a structural shift powered by AI adoption, evolving client expectations, and the urgent need for efficiency.

Earnings Up, Headcount Down

Let the numbers speak:

  • Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported ₹63,437 crore in Q1 FY26 revenue, up 1.3% YoY, but laid off 12,000+ employees—the company’s biggest cut in years
  • Infosys posted 7.5% revenue growth, yet paused campus recruitment for freshers for a third consecutive quarter
  • HCLTech, despite clocking 8.1% growth, quietly downsized in non-billable roles and mid-level delivery functions
  • Krutrim, a SoftBank-backed AI startup founded by Bhavish Aggarwal, laid off over 100 employees, citing internal restructuring after aggressive early hiring

The layoffs are concentrated in roles related to manual testing, IT support, BPO operations, and other functions that AI systems can now handle at scale.

AI Is Driving the Shift

According to TeamLease Digital, nearly 37% of Indian enterprises are already using Agentic AI—a new generation of AI systems that can act autonomously without direct prompts.

These AI systems are increasingly replacing:

  • Entry-level coding roles
  • Manual QA and testing
  • Customer support and ticket triage
  • Reporting, auditing, and backend operations

“Jobs that follow a playbook are the first to go,” said Neeti Sharma, CEO of TeamLease Digital. “Companies aren’t reacting to financial pressure—they’re proactively redesigning their workforce.”

Clients Want Speed, Not Scale

The talent cuts aren’t just about cost—they’re also about client expectations.

Enterprise clients in BFSI, retail, and manufacturing now demand:

  • Faster delivery cycles
  • AI-embedded workflows
  • Outcome-based pricing models
  • Smaller, agile teams over large outsourced headcount

This means the old model of scale-based delivery is being replaced by automation-led sprints, where a leaner team paired with AI can do the work of 50.

That puts pressure on IT firms to reduce bench strength, reskill project leads, and sunset legacy service lines.

Not a Collapse—A Realignment

The shift isn’t killing jobs. It’s relocating them.

According to Nasscom, the number of tech jobs in India is still growing—but unevenly. Here’s where demand is accelerating:

  • AI/ML engineering
  • Cybersecurity operations
  • Data science and analytics
  • Cloud architecture and FinOps
  • Prompt engineering and LLM integration

Over 1.5 million Indian professionals have undergone AI training in the past 24 months, and 95,000+ have earned Level 3 certifications in applied data science, as per Nasscom’s FutureSkills Prime dashboard.

Hiring is especially strong at:

  • Product startups building AI copilots
  • GCCs (Global Capability Centers) focusing on security, cloud, and infra
  • SaaS platforms, fintech, and medtech companies working on platform automation

The Career Outlook

Professionals in India’s IT sector—especially those in mid-level roles, non-core tech functions, or legacy support tracks—are most vulnerable. Many have begun migrating toward freelance gigs, certification programs, or pivoting into AI-aligned roles.

Consulting firms like Zinnov and McKinsey have warned of a “digital hollowing” effect, where traditional IT roles shrink while adjacent job families (AI, analytics, product) explode in value.

This is no longer a question of whether AI will impact jobs—but how quickly it will reset the workforce mix.
