Mahindra Takes 800 Acres for Its Nagpur Plant as Reports Put Direct Jobs at Over 20,000
Mahindra now holds 800 acres at Butibori for a plant local reports tie to 20,000+ direct jobs. See the 2028 timeline, the skills and the internal hiring route.

Mahindra & Mahindra now holds the first 800 acres of its planned Nagpur plant, handed over by the state industrial agency on October 26, and the project is expected to generate more than 20,000 direct jobs, a count from local coverage rather than a figure from Mahindra. Behind it sits a company commitment of ₹15,000 crore (₹150 billion, about $1.6 billion) over a 10-year period in Maharashtra. For Metaintro readers in Nagpur and the wider Vidarbha region, this guide sets out what changed with the handover, how far apart the job estimates are, who Mahindra plans to bring in and which trades its planned skilling centre will cover.
What Happened at Butibori on October 26?
The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) handed over the land in the additional Butibori industrial area. The handover came after Mahindra deposited over ₹706 crore (₹7.06 billion, about $74 million) for the initial phase.
The site is bigger than this first parcel. A total of 1,500 acres has been proposed for the project, and the remaining 700 acres is expected to be handed over in the near future. The next steps are the subsequent transfer of the remaining land and the development of the proposed manufacturing complex.
MIDC regional officer Manohar Pote and chief engineer Rajesh Zanjal handed the land to Vinay Khanolkar, Chief Operating Officer of Mahindra's automotive division, and Nitin Vaidya, plant head of the Nagpur project, along with Ashish Sodte, a senior representative of the company. Kapil Chandrayan of the Association for Industries Development was also there and called the land transfer an important step towards creating a favourable environment for industrial investment in Vidarbha. His association helped facilitate the land transfer, and he expects the project to provide a major impetus to the region's industrial growth and employment generation.
Mahindra had flagged this step in August. On August 31, Mahindra was moving towards taking possession of the first package of approximately 800 acres at Additional Butibori. The handover turns that plan into land the company actually holds.
How Many Jobs Could the Nagpur Plant Bring?
The over-20,000 estimate is local reporting, repeated across Nagpur outlets, and is not credited to Mahindra or a named speaker.
A much smaller figure came from the state in February. At the launch, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said as many as 6,000 people would get employment through this project. The two figures are far apart. The chief minister's quote in Mahindra's own release is less specific, with the investment set to generate significant employment, accelerate regional development in Vidarbha and surrounding areas. Mahindra's own number, role split and hiring calendar are not yet public.
Mahindra has promised detail later. Further details on workforce requirements, opportunities and associated processes will be communicated as the project progresses. The facility will have a special focus on skilling and job creation.
The kinds of work are clearer than the count. The complex is expected to create opportunities across manufacturing, logistics, engineering and support services, and it could also encourage component manufacturers, engineering firms, transport operators, warehousing companies and other service providers to expand their presence in the region. Even so, the eventual scale of indirect employment will depend on the implementation of the associated plans.
What Does the Investment Actually Cover?
The money is wider than one factory. Mahindra also plans to acquire over 2,000 acres across three locations in Maharashtra. Beyond Nagpur, Mahindra will also acquire land in the Igatpuri to Nashik region to expand existing product and engine capacities and support the growth of its Advanced Technology business.
Mahindra's investment commitment covers its Maharashtra initiatives together, and the release gives no separate figure for Nagpur. The plant will reflect Mahindra's focus on innovation, quality and sustainability. Behind it is a group founded in 1945, with a leadership position in farm equipment, utility vehicles, information technology and financial services in India.
The plan went public on February 6, 2026, at the Advantage Vidarbha event. Advantage Vidarbha was a three-day flagship event positioning Vidarbha as an emerging industrial growth hub, and the memorandum of understanding signed at Advantage Vidarbha 2026 is the one that moved forward with the handover.
This facility represents a bold step forward in Mahindra’s manufacturing journey. Designed to support our next generation of vehicles and tractors, it brings together scale, flexibility and advanced technology within one integrated footprint, Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO of the Auto and Farm Sector at Mahindra & Mahindra, said in February.
What Will the Plant Build, and When?
Once fully operational, the plant is planned to have annual capacity of 500,000 vehicles and 100,000 tractors, which would make it Mahindra's largest integrated manufacturing footprint in the country. Production is scheduled to commence in 2028.
The car side is designed for more than one kind of engine. The automotive unit will support next-generation platforms, including the NU_IQ architecture, and will be able to make vehicles across internal combustion, electric and future powertrains for domestic and global markets. Mahindra has previewed the NU_IQ family through concepts including the Vision S, Vision T, Vision X and Vision SXT, though the model-wise production allocation for Nagpur is still to be announced. Mahindra is not building a powertrain-specific factory, and that flexibility is expected to enable the facility to cater to evolving market requirements as the industry moves towards newer technologies.
The plant will feature advanced automation and digital manufacturing systems. The tractor unit will serve both domestic demand and export markets, and it builds on a large base, since Mahindra describes itself as the world's largest tractor company by volume. The site will be developed in phases.
Who Can Get Jobs at the Nagpur Plant?
Mahindra's own staff get a selection round. Over the next two to three years, skilled and experienced associates from its existing manufacturing operations will have an opportunity to participate in a detailed selection process for roles at the new facility.
The selection criteria are set out. It will assess technical capability, demonstrated behaviours, alignment with Mahindra's values and the ability to collaborate effectively. Those associates will also take part in building and mentoring the new workforce.
Mahindra will also put in place processes to identify, develop and skill talent for manufacturing automobiles and tractors across multiple powertrains and future technologies, and the group already employs 324,000 people in over 100 countries.
What Skills Will the Nagpur Skilling Centre Teach?
The plan gives example trades. Mahindra plans to set up a skilling centre in Nagpur to build capabilities across areas such as mechanical operations, welding, painting, and the centre is meant to train local talent in core technical areas. It could help equip local youth with industry-relevant technical skills for automotive and tractor work. Training is also expected to cover modern automotive manufacturing processes and multi-powertrain manufacturing technologies, with capability intended to span multiple powertrain types and future vehicle technologies.
How Does Nagpur Compare With Mahindra's Chakan Plant?
Mahindra's Chakan car plant is heavily automated. Chakan uses approximately 1,500 robots, over 98% automation in body-shop, along with robotic painting and sealer application. The same plant uses 3D component scanning, real-time weld-integrity monitoring and interlocked No Fault Forward quality gateways, with seven multi-model assembly lines and synchronised autonomous mobile robots for material movement. Chakan also has real-time monitoring of personal protective equipment compliance and shop-floor safety, and it pairs its technology with Lean and Total Productive Maintenance methodologies to drive quality, flexibility and operational excellence.
Chakan combines Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, IoT, 5G connectivity, advanced robotics, digital traceability, and flexible multi-model manufacturing, underpinned by Lean and TPM practices, R Velusamy, President of the Automotive Business at Mahindra & Mahindra, said in July.
Chakan also gives a sense of scale. It manufactures 19 models and over 450 variants across ICE passenger vehicles, electric vehicles and commercial vehicles on 657 acres. It rolled out its three-millionth vehicle in July 2026, with the latest one million units made in only 27 months, against 107 months for the first million. The milestone vehicle was the BE 6, Mahindra's most advanced flagship electric SUV. Mahindra's wider SUV line-up includes models such as the Scorpio N, Scorpio Classic, Thar, Thar Roxx and XUV700 in the utility vehicle market and the BE 6 and XEV range creating an entirely new electric SUV portfolio.
The planned Nagpur site is far larger. At full size, the land footprint alone will be more than twice that of Chakan once the entire site is developed. That land bank gives Mahindra room for future capacity expansion, new technologies and manufacturing lines beyond the first phase of the programme. In the Auto Punditz analysis, Nagpur gives Mahindra a fresh greenfield base designed around its future product portfolio rather than requiring continuous expansion of older production facilities. Chakan has been running since its first vehicle in December 2009.
Chakan's output also reaches abroad, with exports to global markets including South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. At Chakan, more than 50% of the plant's energy requirement is met through renewable energy, while electric-vehicle manufacturing at the facility operates on 100% renewable energy. The plant is also certified as Zero Waste to Landfill and is nearing the achievement of its EP100 commitment to double energy productivity and returns the equivalent of 131% of the water it utilises back to nature.
Where Do Suppliers and Other Butibori Employers Fit In?
Part of the work sits outside Nagpur. A 150-acre supplier park in Sambhajinagar will supply components to the new Nagpur plant and to Mahindra's existing plants at Chakan and Nashik. The park is expected to improve localisation, reduce logistics costs and enable closer collaboration with component partners, so part of this project's supply chain will sit in Sambhajinagar rather than Nagpur. The park is meant to support the manufacturing ecosystem by providing space for vendors and component suppliers, with the supplier network potentially benefiting other industrial centres across Maharashtra.
The additional Butibori industrial area is already an important manufacturing destination. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said in September that Avaada's solar module plant in Additional Butibori MIDC, whose foundation stone was laid in 2024, currently employs around 4,000 people. The complex could help a wider industrial ecosystem grow in automobile components, precision engineering, fabrication, assembly and other manufacturing-related activities.
Location was part of the pitch. The region offers road connectivity via the Samruddhi Expressway, robust rail links and access to key domestic and export markets. Nagpur also sits in a geographical location near the centre of India.
What This Means for Job Seekers in Vidarbha, and What Should You Do Next?
The land handover is real progress, but the job count is not settled. The job estimates differ widely, and Mahindra's own number is still to come. Plan around the trades Mahindra has named and the phased build, not around the biggest headline.
- Train in the named trades. Mechanical operations, welding and painting are among the areas Mahindra has listed for its Nagpur skilling centre.
- Use the lead time. A trade course started now builds the core skill first.
- If you already work at a Mahindra plant, prepare for the internal round. Use the criteria above, and list the lines you have worked on the way you would in the skills section of a manufacturing resume.
- Look at suppliers and logistics too. Local coverage expects that supporting industries can generate additional employment and business opportunities beyond the jobs created directly by the manufacturing facility, though no number has been put on that work.
Lacey Kaelani, Metaintro's CEO, puts it this way: A plant on paper is not a job offer yet, but the trades it names are a clear signal of what to learn while the walls go up.
