Microsoft's Latest Washington Cuts

Microsoft has laid off another 40 employees at its Redmond, Washington headquarters, effective September 30, 2025—marking yet another chapter in the company's ongoing transformation.

The new round brings Microsoft’s total Washington state job losses to 3,160 since May.

The Numbers Tell the Story

These local layoffs are part of a much larger wave. Microsoft has cut over 15,000 jobs globally this year, including a sweeping July round that hit Xbox, customer support, and sales teams particularly hard.

All of this comes despite the company posting over $100 billion in profits, and applying for 14,000 H-1B visas—a combination that has drawn ire from both current and former employees.

Washington Bears the Brunt

Washington now accounts for a quarter of all U.S. tech layoffs in 2025, with over 24,789 tech jobs lost in the state so far. Amazon and Microsoft are responsible for the lion’s share, and their downsizing is already sending shockwaves through the local economy.

From housing demand dips in Seattle to declining foot traffic in Redmond’s business district, the broader effects are visible well beyond Microsoft’s campus.

The AI-Driven Restructuring

Internally, Microsoft is pushing a rapid shift toward AI-powered operations. Employees report that AI tool usage is no longer optional. From Copilot integrations to automated project reviews, traditional tech roles are being reshaped—or eliminated—at a blistering pace.

CEO Satya Nadella has publicly framed these decisions as necessary for maintaining "agility in a dynamic marketplace." But many see that as code for AI consolidation: fewer humans, more automation, and higher profit margins.

Uncertainty in the Boom State

For Washington-based workers, the message is clear: even the most profitable tech companies are tightening headcount, and the former promise of job stability at big tech firms no longer holds.

This isn’t just a company story. It’s a state story—and a signal that the AI era may come with more disruption than job creation, at least in the short term.
