13,000 Fewer People Now Work at Novo Nordisk, 4,000 More Than Its Layoff Plan Named

Novo Nordisk has 13,000 fewer staff than a year ago, 4,000 more than its layoff plan named. What laid-off staff in Denmark are owed and where Novo still hires.

The Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk A/S now employs about 13,000 fewer people than it did a year ago, a figure its chief executive put on the table at the company's Capital Markets Day in London on September 21st. That is 4,000 more than the job cuts the company named when it launched its restructuring, and the company has not broken the total down by country. If you are one of the chemists, sales representatives, lab technicians or office staff who left, or you are still inside and wondering what comes next, the useful questions are what you are owed and where the company is still hiring. At Metaintro we read a headcount disclosure like this against the employer's own filings and the national rules that decide a laid-off worker's notice pay and benefits. Below is how the number grew, who was hit, what Danish law guarantees and which Novo teams are recruiting right now.

Why Is the Final Job Count So Much Higher Than the Original Plan?

Two different kinds of exit sit inside the bigger number. The original plan, launched on 10 September 2025, set out to remove approximately 9,000 of the company's 78,400 positions, with around 5,000 of those reductions expected in Denmark. That was a redundancy programme, carried out through negotiations with staff.

The second group left more quietly. In its investor presentation, the company put the number of further departures at 4,000 over the past year, and a spokesperson explained that most of those exits were natural attrition plus roles Novo chose to leave unfilled. In plain terms, people resigned or retired and nobody was hired behind them.

For workers, that difference matters. A redundancy triggers notice, severance and a negotiated process. A vacancy that is quietly frozen triggers nothing, but it shrinks the team you work in and the internal openings you could move into. The combined result is a total of 13,000 full time jobs cut, against the 9,000 the company had first forecast.

What Did Novo Promise When the Restructuring Began?

The company framed the cuts as a way to move faster in an obesity market that had become more competitive and more consumer driven. The workforce reduction was expected across the Company, including staff areas and headquarters functions, rather than concentrated in one plant or division.

The money was the headline for investors. The plan aimed to deliver annualised savings of around DKK 8 billion by the end of 2026, redirected to diabetes and obesity growth, commercial initiatives and research programmes, with one off restructuring costs also put at DKK 8 billion.

The process was spelled out too. Implementation was to begin immediately, and the company expected to communicate with affected employees over the following few months, pending negotiations as per local legal labour market requirements. The chief executive's words at the time were blunt about the cost to staff.

"It is always difficult to see talented and valued colleagues go, but we are convinced that this is the right thing to do for the long-term success of Novo Nordisk," the company's announcement quoted its CEO as saying.

The savings are now showing up in the accounts. In the interim report for the first half, sales and distribution costs decreased by 13% at CER, a fall the company links to savings across regions following the company wide restructuring announced in the third quarter of last year.

How Much Smaller Is Novo Than It Was?

The company's own documents trace the shrinkage step by step. Its annual report five year overview shows headcount of 77,349 at the end of 2024 and 69,505 at the end of 2025, a fall it lists as 10%.

The newest figure is lower again. The boilerplate on the Capital Markets Day release now describes a company of approximately 66,000 employees around the world. A year earlier, the restructuring announcement described Novo as employing about 78,400 people in 80 countries.

The same annual report table shows headcount of 48,478 in 2021 and 64,319 in 2023, which puts today's workforce back near where it stood before the last big hiring push. Part of the headcount added during the weight loss drug boom has now been unwound.

How Hard Were Workers in Denmark Hit?

Harder than the headline suggests, although the company has not given an exact figure. The chief executive did not give details on how many of the 13,000 jobs cut were in Denmark.

Danish business press figures give a rough picture. Staff numbers in Denmark stood at 33,820 in September 2025 and 26,511 at the end of July this year, and on those numbers The Local calculates that more than 7,000 jobs have gone in Denmark. That is well above the 5,000 Danish reductions the company forecast at the outset.

Novo's current Danish job listings sit mostly in the Capital Region of Denmark, in places such as Bagsværd, Søborg, Måløv and Hillerød, which is where much of its research, quality and headquarters work is done, with a cluster of factory and technical roles in Kalundborg in Region Zealand. For many teams there, this disclosure lands on top of the first wave of Novo Nordisk cuts, so people who survived one round are now reading about a bigger total.

International employees face an extra layer of pressure. A survey highlighted by the Copenhagen Post newsroom found that foreign workers in Denmark report more stress, weaker institutional trust and a greater likelihood of leaving the country after layoffs than Danish workers do.

What Happened to Novo's Workers in the United States?

The cuts reached the company's American operations quickly. At its US headquarters in Plainsboro, New Jersey, the company had listed 265 layoffs as of Oct. 8, and by late October the count listed with the state labour department under the federal WARN Act had reached 811.

The factory side was hit as well. At the Clayton, North Carolina plant, which produces semaglutide and handles packaging for US supply, a Reuters analysis of social media posts found 47 posts explicitly stating the poster had been laid off or was looking for work. The roles included production line technicians, technical manufacturing workers, project coordinators, a strategic communications manager and an HR assistant.

The New Jersey number is public because the cuts were listed with the state's labour department under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. The Danish split has not been disclosed, and the only estimate comes from Børsen's headcount figures.

What Notice Must a Laid-Off Salaried Worker in Denmark Get?

This is set by law, not by the employer's goodwill. Under the Act on Salaried Employees, known as funktionærloven, an employer must always have a substantial reason for firing an employee, and restructuring or cost savings count as such a reason.

The notice owed grows with length of service. The Ministry of Employment's guide sets out the employer's notice periods under the Act:

The termination must be in writing. A written termination is a requirement for salaried employees covered by the Act, and the notice periods for your role should already be in your employment contract, a point the union HK Danmark stresses to its members.

During notice you keep working and keep your full salary unless the employer releases you. That release is known as garden leave, or fritstillet, and it means you are paid through the notice period without having to come in, which gives you time to job hunt on full pay.

What Severance Is a Long-Serving Novo Worker Owed?

Denmark adds a lump sum for people with long tenure. If you have been continuously employed by the same company for 12 years, you are entitled to a severance payment equal to one month's salary on top of your notice pay.

The amount rises for the longest serving staff. Under section 2a of the Act, the statutory severance payment increases to three months' salary after 17 years. It applies only when the employer ends the contract, so it is lost if you resign before your role is cut.

Collective agreements can improve on these minimums but never cut below them. If your team at Novo sits under a collective agreement, check it alongside the Act, because it may add longer notice or higher severance pay than the statute guarantees.

What Rules Apply When a Danish Employer Cuts Staff in Bulk?

A layoff this large also falls under Denmark's collective redundancy rules. An employer making mass redundancies is obliged to negotiate with the employees or their representatives and to inform the relevant Regional Labour Market Council.

The trigger is low for a big site. At workplaces with at least 300 employees, the rules apply when 30 employees are notified of dismissal within a 30 day period, and the dismissals cannot take effect earlier than 30 days after the council has been informed.

There is a longer brake for the deepest cuts. If more than half the employees in a workplace with over 100 staff are dismissed, the dismissals can take effect no earlier than 8 weeks after the notification, which in practice extends short notice periods.

Denmark guarantees laid-off salaried staff up to six months of notice on full pay, and that time is the best window you will get to line up your next role.

How Do Unemployment Benefits Work After a Layoff in Denmark?

Cover is not automatic. Danish unemployment insurance is a voluntary insurance scheme, so you only receive benefits, known as dagpenge, if you joined an unemployment insurance fund, or a-kasse, before losing your job.

The main conditions are specific. You must have been a member of a fund for at least one year, and a full time insured person must have earned at least DKK 286,632 over the past three years under this year's rules. You also need a complete and approved CV no later than 2 weeks after registering as unemployed.

Registration timing can cost you money. You cannot receive benefits for any period before you register as unemployed on Jobnet.dk, so register on the first day you are out of work.

The payment is capped twice. Benefits can reach a maximum of 90 per cent of your previous salary, calculated on the 12 months with the highest income in the past 24 months, and a full time insured member can receive at most DKK 22,041 a month under this year's rates. They run for 2 years within 3 years, which the rules express as 3,848 hours. A senior scientist on a high salary will hit that monthly ceiling fast, so notice pay and severance do more of the work than benefits in the first months.

Where Is Novo Still Hiring After the Cuts?

Hiring has not stopped, it has narrowed. The company's own careers site lists 82 open roles in Denmark, many posted within the past fortnight, and the mix shows where the company is spending.

The Danish listings lean toward data, quality and manufacturing science. They include senior, lead and advanced AI engineer roles in Ballerup, laboratory technicians in Bagsværd, a senior formulation professional in Hillerød and a laboratory animal veterinarian in Måløv. A laid-off analytical chemist or QC specialist should read these listings closely, because knowing the company's quality systems and products is a real edge when a former employer reopens a role.

In the United States, the Clayton plant is recruiting on the factory floor. Its listing shows 23 open roles in Clayton, including automation technicians, process engineers, industrial utilities maintenance technicians on nights and a maintenance technician post for a welder. That is the same site where a $4.1 billion expansion announced in 2024 was meant to add 1,000 employees, a plan that was left in doubt after last autumn's layoffs.

Ireland is a smaller bright spot. Novo employs 260 people at its facility in Athlone, and it has committed €432 million to upgrading the plant to produce the tablet form of its Wegovy drug.

Where Is the Money From the Cuts Going?

Into new drugs and new markets, according to the strategy presented in London. The company is aiming to launch more than five multi-blockbusters by 2030, scale capacity to serve ten times more people with obesity on its oral treatment and serve more than 60 million patients globally by the same year.

The chief executive tied the savings directly to that plan. In his words, "These were not easy decisions for us to make, but they were necessary," with the resources saved going into research and development and competitiveness.

The pipeline goal is large. Novo is targeting 150 billion Danish krone in combined pipeline sales by 2035 and is expanding into liver and cardiovascular health beyond its core obesity and diabetes business.

Investors were not fully convinced. Shares dropped 5% during the chief executive's opening remarks, a sign investors wanted more specifics, and the company signalled it would be more active in business development. For staff, a deal driven strategy can mean new teams arriving through acquisitions while existing ones keep shrinking.

What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

The honest reading is that Novo is no longer a growth employer across the board. It is a company that has cut deep in staff and headquarters functions while still hiring in manufacturing, quality and AI. If your skills sit in those areas, the company is still a realistic target. If they sit in general corporate roles, look beyond it.

Our view is that the quieter part of the cut deserves more attention than it gets. Roles left unfilled do not produce a WARN notice or a Danish consultation, but they close internal doors for the people who stayed. If you are still at Novo and your team has shrunk by attrition, assume internal mobility is tighter than it looks and keep your external options warm.

Here is how we would act on it:

  • Laid off in Denmark. Check your written notice against the statutory table, confirm your severance if you have 12 or more years of service, ask whether outplacement support is part of the package, and register on Jobnet on your first day out of work.
  • Still employed at Novo. Update your CV now while you have the company's name and current projects behind you, and check whether you are an a-kasse member, because cover only starts after a year.
  • Pharma and biotech job seekers. Watch the Denmark job listings for quality, formulation and AI roles, where the company is still recruiting after the cuts.
  • Manufacturing and maintenance workers in North Carolina. The Clayton listings are open now, with technician and night shift roles among them, so apply while the plant is still recruiting.

The one thing not to do is read this headcount drop as a sign that Danish pharma has stopped hiring. It is a sign that one very large employer has changed shape, and the people who understand that new shape will find the doors that are still open.
