Osinowo Advocates for Collaborative Efforts to Tackle Youth Unemployment

The issue of youth unemployment in Nigeria has reached a critical point, prompting calls for a united approach among federal, state, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). David Osinowo, Managing Director of LD&D Consulting, highlighted this urgency during the recent Lagos Job Fair, which he convened to promote employment opportunities for young Nigerians.

Rising Unemployment Rates Demand Urgent Action

During the event, Osinowo articulated the necessity for increased collaboration in the fight against soaring youth unemployment rates across the nation. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that Nigeria's unemployment rate surged to 33.3% in late 2022, immersing the country in what many are calling a crisis, especially for the youth demographic. With over 60% of the population under the age of 25, the ramifications of unemployment are particularly dire.

Osinowo emphasized a pressing need to bridge the gap between job seekers and employers. He pointed out that various organizations, including Etransact, Axa Mansard, and The Concept Group, are actively seeking talent to compensate for workforce shortages intensified by what many refer to as the "Japa" syndrome—a trend where skilled Nigerians are emigrating abroad in search of better opportunities.

This brain drain has left many companies struggling to fill critical positions, further exacerbating youth unemployment. Osinowo underscored the importance of sustained initiatives, similar to the Lagos Job Fair, to provide significant pathways for job seekers to connect with these potential employers.

Connecting Job Seekers with Opportunities

The Lagos Job Fair was not just a networking event; it served as a keystone for employment initiatives aimed at creating structure in the chaotic job market. "The federal government and other organizations must create avenues to bridge the gap between job seekers and employers. This is not just a one-off fair; it needs to be replicated across various states," Osinowo stated.

Anjola Ayodele, a seasoned human resources professional, also contributed to the conversation at the event, advising recent graduates to begin their job search as soon as possible. "Many graduates believe that they need prior experience to land a good job. However, the reality is that many employers are looking for passion, willingness to learn, and the right attitude over formal experience," said Ayodele.

This advice comes at a time when various sectors in Nigeria showcase a significant demand for new talent. Industries such as technology, finance, and retail are poised for growth and require a fresh influx of skilled workers. In a recent survey by the World Bank, it was noted that the information and communication technology (ICT) sector alone could generate up to 6 million jobs by 2025, provided that the workforce is equipped with relevant skills and knowledge.

Education institutions and training centers are urged to align their curriculum to match industry demands, focusing on areas such as digital skills, project management, and emotional intelligence—attributes increasingly sought after by employers in the current job market.

Looking Ahead

Moving forward, Osinowo's vision for a collaborative effort in reducing youth employment is vital not only for individuals but for the economy as a whole. With Nigeria’s population expected to double in the next three decades, addressing youth unemployment is imperative for maintaining social stability and economic growth.
