Sainsbury's and Argos are launching a nationwide Christmas recruitment drive, with 17,500 roles available across the UK, and every one of them is a fixed-term contract ranging from four to 12 weeks. This guide looks at the drive from the side of shop floor workers, delivery drivers, warehouse operatives, students and anyone after extra income before the new year. In-store jobs pay £13.23 to £14.54 an hour, varying by location and role, and Christmas listings are live on the Sainsbury's Christmas careers page. For Metaintro readers, the useful detail is practical, covering the hours, the age rules, the checks and the closing dates that Sainsbury's sets in its listings and its own application guide. Here is that detail, role by role.

What Did Sainsbury's and Argos Announce on Monday?

The drive launched on Monday 5 October. The 17,500 roles cover Sainsbury's supermarkets, convenience stores, warehouses, Argos stores and online fulfilment operations, with work ranging from keeping shelves stocked with festive favourites to picking online orders and supporting deliveries.

It is the annual Christmas recruitment drive for the two brands. Sainsbury's has more than 600 supermarkets and 885 convenience stores. Argos customers also collect orders through more than 1,100 collection points across the United Kingdom.

Seasonal staff get free food during shifts and an uncapped colleague discount of 10% at Sainsbury's and Argos, rising to 15% every Friday and Saturday at Sainsbury's. Pay for these Christmas employees varies by role and location.

Sainsbury's gives one combined total for both brands in its Christmas recruitment announcement, with no split between Sainsbury's and Argos. To apply, the company points people to its Christmas job opportunities page or to their local store.

Whether someone is joining us for the first time or returning for another Christmas, they’ll play an important role in helping customers celebrate, Sainsbury's chief retail, logistics and supply chain officer Tracey Clements said, according to the Sainsbury's announcement.

Which Seasonal Roles Can You Apply For?

Seasonal work is grouped into three teams.

Applications are now open, and on launch day seasonal and permanent jobs appeared side by side in the latest roles feed. In the same feed, a fixed-term Customer Assistant role at the Kirkcaldy store sat next to permanent Customer Assistant roles at stores such as Tadley, Nairn and Bishop Auckland, so check the contract type on each listing before you apply.

What Do the Christmas Jobs Pay?

The drive has three pay bands, each varying by location and role.

The company's base hourly rate has been £13.23 nationally and £14.54 in London since March 2026, with higher rates for driving roles. The live Cambridge listings pay the bottom of their pay bands, with a Customer Assistant role at £13.23 an hour and a Customer Delivery Driver role at the same store at £14.73 an hour.

For comparison, the legal floor for workers aged 21 and over is the National Living Wage of £12.71 an hour from April 2026. Hourly pay has risen by 42 per cent over the past five years, Sainsbury's said, and the March 2026 rise is covered in Sainsbury's Boosts Pay Above Inflation Rate Again.

What Do the Live Listings Ask For?

Here is what three fixed-term roles on the Christmas careers page ask for.

The Customer Delivery Driver role at Coldhams Lane in Cambridge is a part time, fixed-term job of 30 hours a week, with a closing date of 17 October 2026. Applicants must be over 18, have held a full UK/EU driving licence for at least 12 months with no more than 6 points on it, and have Right to Work eligibility in the UK. The hiring process for this role includes an online driving risk assessment as part of the interview and a driving assessment on joining, and drivers take a 3.5 tonne refrigerated van out on planned routes. Sainsbury's has installed in-cab AI cameras that monitor driver behaviour, and the job involves moving containers weighing up to 15kg. Benefits on this role include a pension match of between 4-7.5% of contributions and holiday entitlement based on the hours you work.

The Customer Assistant role at the same Cambridge store is part time at 16 hours a week and fixed-term, with a closing date of 16 October 2026. Its availability window is 04:00 to 08:00 on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and shifts are planned within those times and shared three weeks in advance. The tasks include filling shelves, picking orders, serving customers or selling Sainsbury's products, plus moving often heavy loads.

The Argos Customer Advisor role inside the Dewsbury Sainsbury's is part time at 16 hours a week and fixed-term, with a closing date of 5 October 2026, which is also the day the Christmas drive launched. Vacancies may close quickly, and on this role the colleague discount card applies after four weeks. This role covers the tills, website screens on the shopfloor, the collection counter and the stock area, and it includes giving details on financial service offerings for certain products.

How Do You Apply, and What Happens After?

Every genuine vacancy is hosted on sainsburys.jobs, and applying follows a set of steps.

You can track progress through the link sent when you first applied, and withdraw from your candidate profile if you change your mind. For most retail-based roles, applicants can expect to hear back within 2-4 weeks. For an update, contact the hiring manager, recruiter or store you applied to, and store locators for both Sainsbury's and Argos are linked from the help page.

Once hired, most Sainsbury's and Argos roles are paid every four weeks on a Friday, and some Argos roles are paid at the end of each month. Applicants are asked at application and interview stage to confirm they have evidence of Right to Work in the UK, and the evidence is submitted before employment starts. An unspent conviction won't always hold you back, though certain convictions and certain roles, such as Home Delivery Drivers, may limit what Sainsbury's can offer.

How Does This Year's Drive Compare With Last Year's?

The 2025 drive, launched on 6 October 2025, was for 19,000 seasonal roles, made up of 17,000 at Sainsbury's and 2,000 at Argos. Last year's in-store pay band was £12.60 to £13.85 an hour, and the contracts were the same four to 12 weeks.

Last year the discount also rose to 15% on payday at Argos, and this year's 15% rate is every Friday and Saturday at Sainsbury's. Last year fulfilment warehouse jobs had their own pay band of £12.60 to £13.85 an hour, and this year's three pay bands have no separate warehouse rate.

Asked why the number fell, Sainsbury's said it reviews its seasonal recruitment needs each year. It said no when asked whether its KickStarter work experience programme or changes in employment law and contracted hours cut the number. KickStarter participants will not carry out the roles of store colleagues or replace them.

Will a Christmas Contract Turn Into a Permanent Job?

Asked how many of the fixed-term roles are expected to become permanent, Sainsbury's gives no number. The roles are being recruited on fixed-term contracts to support customers during the busy festive period.

Any permanent opportunities will be based on the needs of each local store or site, and seasonal colleagues are welcome to apply for suitable roles. Permanent Customer Assistant jobs are already advertised on the same Christmas careers page.

The safe reading for job seekers is simple. Take a Christmas contract for the pay, the hours and the experience, and treat any permanent offer as a separate application. What Does the Argos Sale Mean for Argos Seasonal Staff?

Sainsbury's announced on 31 July 2026 that it had agreed to sell Argos to Swift Partners, a new company set up by Richard Pennycook, Trevor Strain and Matt Truman alongside True Capital. The deal is expected to complete in February 2027, with full separation expected by February 2029.

Argos is part of this year's drive, as Sainsbury's will retain ownership of the general merchandise retailer until the sale completes, which is expected in February 2027. Until completion, Argos and Sainsbury's will continue to operate as they do today.

The business Swift is set to acquire includes the Argos standalone stores and store-in-store operations located within Sainsbury's stores, along with Argos logistics networks, and Swift will also acquire Sainsbury's distribution centre in Daventry. Asked whether the number of seasonal Argos roles dropped because of the separation, Sainsbury's answers no, saying the number reflects what the business needs to support customers this Christmas.

How Can You Spot a Fake Christmas Job Offer?

Fake job adverts and messages can appear convincing, so these checks matter. All genuine vacancies are hosted on sainsburys.jobs, and any advert or message about a role should send you back there.

Unexpected offers, rushed timelines, or anything that bypasses our application process are unlikely to be genuine, according to the Sainsbury's application guide.

What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

Our take is that this is a short-term source of income over the festive period, with a printed pay band and fixed contract lengths. It is not a guaranteed path to a permanent role, and Sainsbury's makes no such promise. The total of 17,500 is also lower than last year's 19,000, so there are fewer seasonal places on offer this year.
