SpaceX Offers a 20% Pay Premium to Staff Who Volunteer for Six Weeks in Memphis or Southaven
SpaceX staff who volunteer for six weeks at its Memphis or Southaven data centers get a 20% premium on base pay. See who qualifies, tax rules and local jobs.

SpaceX is offering employees who volunteer a 20% premium on their base salary or hourly rate to spend six weeks helping build its Colossus supercomputers in Memphis, Tennessee, and Southaven, Mississippi. This is a temporary move for existing staff, not a permanent relocation, and the company is also covering travel and logistics. The details come from an internal email sent in early October to all employees, which Business Insider reviewed. For Metaintro readers, the useful part sits below the headline, in who qualifies, how long the program runs, what a short out-of-state assignment means for your taxes, and which Memphis roles are open to people who do not work at SpaceX yet.
What Exactly Is SpaceX Offering Staff Who Volunteer?
The offer is a pay premium for a fixed stint. Volunteers receive a 20% premium on their base salary or on their hourly rate of pay for the period of their assignment, and they become eligible for bonuses tied to program success.
Volunteers should expect to spend six weeks on-site in either Memphis or Southaven, where SpaceX is expanding its Colossus 1 and 2 data centers. Travel expenses and logistics are covered by SpaceX, and the email describes the program as a surge, a tactic the company uses to divert employees and resources to mission-critical projects.
Two points matter for anyone weighing the offer. The premium applies for the period of the assignment only, so it is not a permanent raise. No amount is given for the bonuses tied to program success, so treat them as possible upside rather than part of the pay. SpaceX did not respond to a request for comment.
Employees who volunteer will receive a 20% premium on their base salary or on their hourly rate of pay for the period of their assignment, according to the Business Insider report.
Who Can Volunteer for the Six-Week Surge?
The bar is performance standing and drive, not job title. Volunteers must be in good performance standing, with more than one year of tenure preferred. Volunteers do not need to be managers already, construction experience is a plus, and in the email's words, "drive matters most."
The email to staff said SpaceX now needs leaders, current and emerging, to guide teams and remove blockers as it brings more supercomputers online.
Tenure is listed as a preference, not a rule, and the Business Insider report gives no detail on how volunteers are chosen.
How Long Has the Memphis Surge Been Running?
Since at least August. SpaceX has been offering surging employees a 20% premium on their salary to move to Memphis since at least August, according to a second email seen by Business Insider. That earlier message called for "SpaceX experts and aces" to work for the next three months on the data center buildout.
The program is intended to end on December 31, 2026, but it could be extended.
Why Does SpaceX Need More Hands at Colossus Right Now?
Because SpaceX is expanding Colossus 1 and 2 to meet surging demand for its compute business. AI, which SpaceX now calls Super Intelligence, has emerged as its largest business. Super Intelligence revenue reached $7.56 billion, up from $813 million a year earlier, in SpaceX's third quarter 2026 results. Revenue for the whole company was $14.6 billion, up 161% year over year.
Nameplate compute reached 1.7 GW as of September 30, 2026, up from 1.4 GW as of June 30, 2026 and 0.6 GW a year earlier, as SpaceX continued the buildout of Colossus II. Of the $19.6 billion in capital expenditures in the quarter, more than $16.4 billion was committed to the AI business.
Companies including Anthropic and Google rent computing capacity from SpaceX, and on the analyst call Elon Musk described SpaceX as being "hounded relentlessly" by companies looking to rent its compute. In its Memphis-area data centers, SpaceX's AI business is on track to be able to bring 200,000 of Nvidia's Grace Blackwell system online "every month for the remainder of this year."
The target ahead is larger still. Musk is pushing toward an extra 10 gigawatts of compute online by the end of 2027, and he told investors, "I've been spending, personally, a lot of my time in Memphis, often four days a week." On the same call, Musk said SpaceX aims to "deploy power, cooling infrastructure at a rate that is vastly faster than anyone else."
Who Is Running the Memphis Buildout?
SpaceX has moved senior rocket and satellite leaders onto the project. An early September memo put Kevin Holland, a veteran of the launch business, in charge of building out SpaceX's AI compute infrastructure. The memo said he would be tasked with "bringing up the next 6 phases of compute by end of year."
Two other senior executives, Wesley Salandro and Alexandra Noe, from the Falcon rocket and Starlink divisions, would report directly to Holland, the memo said. The Colossus sites were originally built by xAI before it was folded into SpaceX in February.
Has SpaceX Paid People to Move Before?
Yes, in Texas. In 2022, SpaceX rolled out an offer to salaried employees of pay bumps between 10% to 25% if they moved to south Texas to help the Starship effort at Starbase, people familiar with the situation told CNBC. The company also increased its hourly pay rates for non-salaried Starbase employees and added performance-based incentives for 2023.
The Memphis offer is a premium on base salary or hourly rate for the period of a six-week assignment. Engineers at SpaceX's Starbase company town in Texas have faced relocation pressure.
What Does a Six-Week Assignment Mean for Your Taxes?
The tax rules decide how the travel costs SpaceX covers are treated. Under the IRS guide to travel, gift and car expenses, if an assignment away from your main place of work is temporary, your tax home does not change, and you are treated as away from home for the whole period.
Generally, a temporary assignment in a single location is one that is realistically expected to last (and does in fact last) for 1 year or less, according to the IRS travel expense guide.
A six-week posting is well under the 1 year the IRS uses as the general test. If an assignment is indefinite, you must include in your income any amounts you receive from your employer for living expenses, even if they are called travel allowances and you account to your employer for them. If SpaceX extends the program or offers a longer stay, ask HR in writing how it will treat travel and lodging costs.
State tax is the second check. Under Mississippi Department of Revenue guidance, you should file a Mississippi return if you are a nonresident or part-year resident with income taxed by Mississippi, or if Mississippi income tax is withheld from your wages. For tax year 2026, taxable income in excess of $10,000 is taxed at 4%.
If your six weeks are in Southaven, keep your pay stubs and ask payroll which state is withholding. A tax adviser can tell you whether a credit in your home state applies.
Can Outsiders Get Into the Memphis Build Without Working at SpaceX?
Not through the surge, which is for current employees. But the company is hiring around the same sites. When we checked it in October, SpaceXAI's jobs board showed 293 jobs, and a long run of them carry a Southaven and Memphis location tag, from an architect to a chiller technician, construction managers and night-shift superintendents.
The board is not only construction management. The same jobs board listed a Combo Welder, a Construction Rigger, Controls Technicians, an Electrical Commissioning Technician, a Critical Facilities Technician, a Data Center Operations Technician and Driver (CDL) roles, including a night-shift driver, all tagged for Southaven and Memphis. Support jobs show up too, with a Barista and a Cook posted for Memphis.
Beyond the SpaceXAI openings around Memphis from September, these postings on SpaceXAI's current jobs board are worth a look.
- Carpenter (Construction) posting, an hourly position with overtime and a build job, not a facilities-maintenance job.
- Certified Weld Inspector posting
- Construction Scheduler posting
- Data Center Fiber Technician posting
- Construction Manager posting
None of these five postings lists a pay figure, so ask the recruiter for the rate before you invest time in the process. The fiber technician and construction manager roles also carry drug testing and background check terms, so read each posting to the end.
In an X post reported in early August, Musk sought exceptional engineering and skilled trades talent to build and operate SpaceX's AI supercomputer clusters, and applicants were asked to email 3 bullet points demonstrating evidence of exceptional ability, along with a resume, to the company's data center hiring address.
The three-bullet-point requirement has become a hallmark of Musk's recruiting style, according to Business Insider, and he has previously asked candidates for white-collar roles at his companies for three bullet points on the "toughest technical problems" they have solved. SpaceXAI now operates Colossus, the AI supercomputer campus in Memphis that trains the company's Grok AI models.
What Is Happening Around the Memphis Build?
SpaceX also faces an air pollution lawsuit in the Memphis area. The US Department of Justice lost its bid to have a federal court in Mississippi toss a Clean Air Act lawsuit filed by the NAACP against SpaceX over its Memphis-area operations. The data centers are powered by methane gas-burning turbines installed by the company's AI business. The NAACP's suit says the company built and used gas-burning turbines for power without first obtaining proper permits, and without installing required pollution controls. The Justice Department had accused the NAACP of threatening "American national, economic, and energy security" by asking the court to temporarily shut off the power supply used by SpaceX at its Colossus data centers.
Jobs were part of the announcement in Mississippi. When the Southaven data center was announced in January, the Office of Governor Tate Reeves put the corporate investment above $20 billion and said the project will create hundreds of permanent jobs throughout DeSoto County. The Mississippi Development Authority also approved xAI for its Data Center Incentive, which provides a sales and use tax exemption for all computing and equipment software used by companies certified as data centers by the agency.
Upon completion, the Southaven data center was set to increase the company's computing power to nearly 2 gigawatts, and Musk said at the time, "we are building our third massive data center in the greater Memphis area." The City of Southaven and DeSoto County are also supporting the projects through fee-in-lieu agreements.
A surge moves existing staff in for a few weeks, while the local postings are where new hires come in.
What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?
The surge shows where SpaceX is putting its people. It is paying a 20% premium to move existing staff onto the Colossus sites, while its current jobs board lists trades roles at the same sites.
If you already work at SpaceX, the decision comes down to three questions. Does six weeks away fit your life? Can you show good performance standing? And how will your pay be taxed while you are there? Get the answer on state withholding before you go, especially for Southaven, where the Mississippi Department of Revenue expects nonresidents with income taxed by the state to file.
If you do not work at SpaceX yet and you are a carpenter, weld inspector, fiber technician or scheduler, the surge is not open to you, but the open postings around the same sites are. Match your experience to the years or certification each posting lists, ask for the rate up front, and be ready for long shifts, since the carpenter role asks for willingness to work nights, weekends, and extended shifts during construction, and the weld inspector role involves significant travel. Some data center employers are paying off student loans to land electricians and welders, so ask what perks come with the rate.
Finally, watch the end date. The program is set to run to December 31, 2026 unless it is extended.
