Tech Industry Cuts 180000 Jobs Globally

Global tech sector shed 180,000 jobs by October 2025 with Intel, Microsoft, and TCS leading cuts. AI automation drives 28% of layoffs as industry reshapes workforce at 489 jobs lost daily.

Tech Industry Cuts 180000 Jobs Globally

The tech industry is hemorrhaging jobs at a pace not seen since the 2020 pandemic crash.

As of October 1, 2025, tech companies worldwide have slashed 180,094 positions across 413 firms, according to data compiled by Layoffs.fyi and TrueUp trackers. That works out to 489 people losing their jobs every single day.

The carnage shows no signs of slowing. If current trends hold, 2025 could match or exceed 2024's total of 152,000 tech layoffs, making it one of the worst years on record for the sector.

Intel, Microsoft, and India's Tata Consultancy Services are leading the cuts, with American companies accounting for a staggering 66.3% of all global tech layoffs at 119,368 positions eliminated.

AI Takes the Blame

Here's the uncomfortable truth the industry doesn't want to talk about: artificial intelligence is directly responsible for a significant chunk of these job losses.

RationalFX estimates that 50,184 of the 180,094 layoffs—roughly 28%—were directly tied to companies implementing AI and automation tools. That's not speculation. It's based on company announcements, WARN notices, and independent layoff reports.

Alan Cohen, analyst at RationalFX, put it bluntly: "Rather than creating new opportunities, these cuts have left the workforce smaller and more automated, raising concerns over job security and the human cost of the tech industry's push towards AI."

The most recent example? Accenture laid off over 11,000 employees in the past three months alone, explicitly citing the inability to retrain staff for AI roles as the primary factor. The global consulting giant is moving toward greater automation and training remaining workers to use AI agents instead of maintaining a larger workforce.

The Biggest Casualties

Intel tops the list with plans to eliminate between 21,000 and 25,000 workers—representing 15% to 24% of its global workforce. The chip giant is cutting costs by over 1.5 billion dollars as sales slump and the company pivots toward AI-focused products. Factory closures and restructuring under new CEO Lip-Bu Tan are underway.

Microsoft has cut 15,000 positions across multiple rounds from January through September, targeting cloud (Azure), sales, and engineering teams. Despite strong revenue growth and over 75 billion dollars in net income across three quarters, CEO Satya Nadella says the company needs to realign strategically as it commits over 80 billion dollars to AI infrastructure investments.

In India, Mumbai-based TCS has shed 12,000 staff since the start of 2025, about 2% of its total workforce. The company describes it as building a "future-ready organization," but employees point to TCS's controversial "bench policy" that restricts how long workers can remain unassigned to projects before being let go.

Beyond the Big Three

The layoffs extend far beyond the headline names. Amazon cut 10,000 to 12,000 positions, primarily in AWS sales and marketing plus retail tech divisions. CEO Andy Jassy told staff the company expects to need fewer people in many roles due to AI agent rollout.

Meta eliminated 5,000 to 7,000 positions from non-core teams, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasizing "non-regrettable attrition" as the company prioritizes AI investments over headcount growth.

Accenture trimmed 11,000 workers in Europe alone as client demand shifts and automation accelerates.

Japanese tech giant Panasonic led Asia's largest layoff wave, shedding over 10,000 employees as it restructures to focus on core areas and enhance operational efficiency.

Other major cuts came from Salesforce (2,000-3,000), Google (1,000-2,000), Oracle (800-1,000), and Block (roughly 1,000).

February and April Saw Peak Bloodletting

The pain hasn't been distributed evenly across the year. February saw a peak of 16,000 job cuts in a single month. April exceeded 23,000 layoffs as companies accelerated restructuring plans heading into the second quarter.

While numbers can vary due to phased implementations and regional differences in reporting requirements, the trend is unmistakable: tech companies are aggressively downsizing even as they pump billions into AI development.

Which Roles Are Disappearing

The job cuts target specific categories. Software engineering roles are vanishing as AI tools perform tasks previously done by junior programmers. Microsoft reports that 40% of its recent layoffs affected developers.

Customer support positions are being automated away. Education tech company Chegg cut 22% of its staff after students shifted to free AI tools like ChatGPT instead of paid services.

Human resources departments are getting gutted. IBM eliminated thousands of HR positions in one move and says it won't rehire, replacing workers with an internal AI chatbot called AskHR.

Middle management is disappearing as companies like Intel remove multiple layers of team leadership, saying they can track performance and coordinate work using automation tools.

Content creation, data analysis, and professional services roles are all seeing significant cuts as AI systems handle work that previously required human specialists.

The Global Picture

American companies lead the cuts at 119,368 positions eliminated, representing two-thirds of all global tech layoffs. Silicon Valley and the broader US tech ecosystem continue to feel the brunt.

European companies, particularly Accenture, have shed over 11,000 positions as the region pushes toward greater AI adoption.

Asia is experiencing its own pain, with India's IT sector facing unprecedented pressure as Western enterprises adopt AI-powered platforms, reducing demand for traditional outsourcing services.

The reality is stark: tech companies are simultaneously investing record amounts in AI infrastructure while cutting the human workforce that built the industry. The promise that AI would create more jobs than it destroys is looking increasingly hollow as 2025 unfolds.
