Singapore Graduates Can Chase 1,000 UOB Places Over the Next Year, From Wealth to Anti-Money Laundering

UOB plans to recruit 1,000 young graduates in Singapore until October next year for wealth, anti-money laundering and trainee roles. Here is how each works.

UOB plans to recruit a total of 1,000 young graduates in Singapore until October next year, and a majority of those places are for permanent positions. The plan was announced on 8 October 2026 at the bank's annual employee festival, Better U, and the roles span Personal Financial Services and Anti-Money Laundering, as well as early-career tracks such as the Future Bankers Programme, the Management Associate programme and internships. UOB announced the plan as concerns grow about the impact of AI on entry-level jobs for young adults. For Metaintro readers finishing a degree in Singapore, this guide sets out the entry routes, what each one trains you to do, and where the Future Bankers application opens.

What Exactly Did UOB Announce on October 8?

UOB launched three workforce programmes at the festival. The bank is creating job opportunities for 1,000 young talent, equipping 5,500 managers to lead in an AI-enabled workplace, and enhancing its Gig+U programme for experienced professionals who want flexible work. This year's event was the eighth edition of the bank's annual employee event.

Speaking at the festival, UOB CEO Wee Ee Cheong noted that artificial intelligence can perform many routine tasks currently done by entry-level employees and fresh graduates. He said the bank is committed to investing in the next generation and building the workforce UOB will need in the years ahead. IBM has taken a similar line, betting on entry-level workers as rivals cut them.

"(But) we will not stop hiring," UOB CEO Wee Ee Cheong said at the Better U Festival, according to the Business Times report.

Is It 1,000 Graduates Every Year, or 1,000 in Total?

It is a total, since UOB plans to recruit a total of 1,000 young graduates in Singapore, a majority of which are for permanent positions, until October next year. UOB expects to recruit 1,000 young graduates in a year, which matches a plan to recruit 1,000 young graduates over a year.

Two more limits matter. The count is for Singapore, and it covers Personal Financial Services and Anti-Money Laundering roles plus the Future Bankers Programme, Management Associate and internship programmes. It is also a hiring expectation, since UOB expects to recruit the graduates.

Which Roles Are Graduates Being Hired Into?

UOB said it is "ramping up hiring of fresh graduates" mainly for roles in personal financial services and anti-money laundering.

Future Bankers trainees get frontline exposure with opportunities to apply learning in real customer interactions, and on completion can progress into the wealth and advisory space or transition into the broader banking community. Graduates who excel as a Personal Wealth Executive also have the option to continue and deepen their experience in that role.

Trainees on the wealth-focused scheme also pass through a business support and governance block that builds knowledge on risk and control on AML and advisory conduct.

How Does the Future Bankers Programme Work?

The Future Bankers Programme is a 24-month structured scheme for fresh graduates, and participants receive training before they move on to develop customer-facing skills and wealth advisory capabilities. It is a structured two-year programme designed to build capability, confidence, and real experience from day one.

The programme runs in four stages:

The two-year structure runs from orientation and training in banking fundamentals, banking products, wealth products and advisory skills through business support and governance, wealth advisory and bankwide rotations. The two years are split into blocks of 2, 2, 18 and 2 months, ending with bankwide rotations. Trainees prepare to be advisory-ready through certifications. Graduates also build future-ready banking skills through AI-augmented workflows and data-led decision making, and AI & GenAI Fluency is among its future-ready banking skills.

Rewards include annual performance-based bonuses on top of competitive basic salary, regional exposure through ASEAN immersion for top performers, and opportunities for overseas incentive trips. No salary figure appears on the Future Bankers page.

Who Can Apply, and What Is the Bank Looking For?

Applicants should match this profile in the current Future Bankers listing:

  • Fresh graduates or early-career individuals with an interest in banking and financial services
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-evolving environment
  • Ability to build relationships and work well in teams
  • Additional requirements listed as Develop, Engage, Execute, Strategise

No minimum degree class or required field of study appears in the requirements. Hires get onboarding and training covering core banking fundamentals, exposure to industry trends, including data-driven decision-making and AI-supported ways of working, coaching from experienced banking professionals, and a competitive base salary with performance-based bonuses based on individual and programme outcomes.

For graduates aiming at leadership tracks, the UOB Management Associate Programme is a 24-month accelerated development programme for high-potential graduates, with seven home divisions covering Finance and Corporate Services, Global Markets, Retail Banking, Risk Management, Strategy and Transformation, Technology and Operations, and Wholesale Banking. Participants get rotations tailored to their growth, regional exposure and senior leader mentorship.

Students who have not yet graduated have a separate door, a full-time Summer Internship Programme over a minimum of 10 weeks, and exceptional performers may be considered for the Management Associate Programme. Students are asked to keep an eye on the page for updates on the next recruitment cycle.

"The future of work is not simply about adopting new technologies," Dean Tong, Head of Group Human Resources at UOB, said, according to the UOB news release.

What Is Gig+U, and Who Does the Expansion Help?

Gig+U is UOB's gig employment programme. It enables experienced UOB employees such as those approaching or beyond retirement age, mothers returning to the workforce, and those seeking flexible work options, to contribute their expertise through part-time, flexible or fixed-term opportunities. It was introduced in Singapore in 2021, and existing assignments under the programme are mainly in operational and customer support functions.

The change is that Gig+U will now include customer-facing and sales advisory roles. UOB will be rolling out the enhanced programme to UOB employees and external hires by the first quarter of 2027, so it is not limited to current staff.

The bank plans a curated pool of 200 participants, each receiving a monthly retainer, insurance coverage and access to assignments based on business needs. Participants in select roles that require certification will get a monthly S$500 retainer, paid alongside existing insurance coverage and payment for work undertaken. Participants must complete relevant training and maintain the necessary certifications or licences to be matched to roles.

Gig+U is built for experienced professionals. Wee said the enhanced programme will give experienced staff greater flexibility to continue contributing and sharing their experience with younger colleagues.

Why Is a Bank Training Managers With an AI Coach?

The third programme is for managers, because UOB believes that human-centred leadership will be an increasingly important differentiator as AI transforms the workplace. Under the Better Leader Programme, 5,500 UOB managers across the region are expected to benefit from the programme by end-2027. It is accredited by the Institute of Banking and Finance and covers Leading Self, Leading Teams and Managing Stakeholders.

Managers practise conversations involving career feedback, performance management, delegation, stakeholder engagement and career development on an AI-enabled role-play platform, and receive personalised qualitative feedback with indicative scores against the bank's leadership competency framework.

Dean Tong, Head of Group Human Resources, said, "It must come together with helping our people develop the capabilities that technology cannot replicate, such as judgement, empathy, resilience, leadership and the ability to build trust."

What Is New Compared With Last Year's Better U Announcement?

In October 2025, UOB announced an organisation-wide AI upskilling and reskilling initiative in which all employees would gain foundational Generative AI and automation skills. The bank's flagship Better U programme was launched in 2019 and, by its October 2025 count, had enabled more than 26,000 employees across markets to build competencies. This year's announcement builds on the organisation-wide AI upskilling drive that UOB unveiled at the same festival last year.

The 2025 package focused on upskilling and reskilling its workforce and included a Memorandum of Understanding with the Institute of Banking and Finance, Workforce Singapore and Ngee Ann Polytechnic to build GenAI skills. It sat alongside the Better U Pivot Programme, a job transformation initiative that helps employees reskill and transition into roles in growth areas. This year's package centres on plans to recruit 1,000 young graduates, the Better Leader Programme and an enhanced Gig+U open to external hires.

How Does This Fit Singapore's Graduate Job Market?

Employment rates of fresh graduates from Institutes of Higher Learning have remained broadly stable over the decade, with some year-to-year fluctuations due to cyclical changes, the Ministry of Manpower told Parliament in February, adding that while AI is reshaping the labour market, its specific impact on entry-level PMET jobs remains uncertain. Around 9 in 10 of the 2025 cohort of university graduates found employment 12 months after graduation, similar to previous cohorts, the Ministry of Manpower said in August.

The government introduced the GRaduate Industry Traineeships Programme to help young graduates gain industry experience. United Overseas Bank Limited appears among the host organisations that have onboarded GRIT trainees, and by February GRIT and GRIT@Gov had placed close to 350 trainees since their rollout in October 2025, a count across both programmes. By end-June, GRIT alone had more than 550 GRIT trainees recruited out of 800 places. By February, more than 50 companies had come on board as GRIT host organisations, spanning sectors from Manufacturing, Financial Services, ICT to Professional Services.

GRIT trainees receive a monthly traineeship allowance ranging from S$1,800 to S$2,400, which may vary by traineeship, with the Government funding 70% of it. The February baseline covered Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents who graduated in 2024 or 2025 from universities, polytechnics, ITE or other institutions, including private universities and overseas institutions, those who graduated earlier and completed National Service in those years, and trainees who completed their studies within 2025 but will only receive their award in 2026. Both GRIT programmes have been extended to the 2026 cohort of graduates, the Ministry of Manpower said in August.
