USA TODAY Co.’s Des Moines Register is hiring a Local News Editor to lead and mentor reporters covering Des Moines-area news, including city government, suburban, neighborhood, and public safety topics. The editor will guide breaking, explanatory, narrative, multimedia, and investigative journalism; use audience metrics, analytics, social media, SEO, and audience research to grow digital engagement and subscriptions; encourage experimentation with video, digital technology, and AI; and collaborate with editors and community stakeholders. The role requires a communications or journalism degree or equivalent experience, at least five years in journalism writing, editing, or management, strong editing and news judgment, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work independently under deadline pressure.
