OpenAI is hiring an Operating Systems Engineer focused on connectivity and networking to design, develop, and maintain OS services, frameworks, APIs, and network capabilities for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and IP networking. The role covers connection management, routing, network policy, secure communication, traffic management, isolation, performance optimization, reliability testing, and troubleshooting across operating-system components. Candidates need substantial hands-on experience with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, IP networking, advanced networking capabilities, platform APIs, C++ systems development, asynchronous systems, and complex connectivity debugging.

Additional Information

Required Previous Experiences: Substantial hands-on experience developing Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionality in operating-system frameworks, system services, or connectivity middleware
Practical experience implementing and debugging networked systems with strong IP networking knowledge
Experience implementing advanced networking capabilities such as routing, network policy, VPNs, tunneling, traffic management, or network isolation
Experience designing and maintaining platform APIs and services, including connection lifecycle management and OS component integration
Proficiency in C++ for systems development, including concurrent programming, memory ownership, and resource lifetime management
Strong understanding of asynchronous systems, interprocess communication, and failure handling
Experience diagnosing complex connectivity issues using system traces, protocol captures, logs, and structured debugging
Preferred Qualifications: Experience delivering connectivity capabilities in shipped products and resolving interoperability issues across software stacks and third-party implementations
Depth in transport protocols and performance, including QUIC, congestion control, multi-path networking, or operation across multiple network interfaces
Experience with network virtualization, proxies, NAT, firewalls, or policy enforcement within an operating system
Experience improving connectivity performance or power consumption with repeatable measurements and regression coverage
Understanding of security and privacy considerations in connectivity services, including authentication, permissions, and credential handling
Proficiency in Rust for systems programming
Ability to take ownership of complete solutions and follow problems across framework, service, and underlying stack boundaries
Ability to use experiments and measurements to challenge assumptions and guide technical decisions
Ability to work constructively across disciplines and make tradeoffs among functionality, security, reliability, performance, power, and maintainability
