Microsoft is hiring a Principal Applied Scientist for its MSAI Search Relevance team to lead applied machine learning and information retrieval research at enterprise scale. The role focuses on agentic search, vector and hybrid retrieval, LLM fine-tuning, learning-to-rank, relevance modeling, evaluation, and cross-functional collaboration for Copilot Search, Copilot Chat, and BizChat. The scientist will also mentor and guide an applied science team, translate business goals into scientific strategy, and publish learnings. Required qualifications include a bachelor's, master's, or doctorate in a relevant field plus 3–6 years of related experience, depending on the degree; preferred qualifications include extensive experience in applied science, data analysis, publications, research, production systems, and information retrieval. The typical U.S. base pay range is USD 142,800–274,800 per year, with higher ranges for the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area.
