Description

Apple is hiring a Lead (Principal) Distributed Systems Engineer to design, build, and operate massively scalable, highly available backend services and a multi-tenant platform supporting real-time transactions, analytics, content delivery, and AI/ML services. The role leads technical design, reliability, API quality, cross-team partnerships, and mentorship, while requiring extensive distributed-systems experience, Java and JVM expertise, cloud and database knowledge, and a master's degree in computer science or a related field.

Additional Information

Minimum Education: Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field
Required Previous Experiences: 15+ years of professional software development experience building scalable distributed systems in production, including at least 5 years in a Principal or Sr. Staff Level role
Experience building and operating large-scale, multi-tiered distributed systems and customer-facing web services
Hands-on JVM performance tuning and profiling
Experience with async and reactive JVM stacks
Rigorous testing discipline with JUnit 5, Mockito, AssertJ, Testcontainers, and contract testing
Experience with Gradle build and dependency management
Deep understanding of transactional consistency models and relational versus NoSQL databases
Expertise with synchronous and asynchronous network I/O and gRPC
Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines
Experience with AWS or GCP and cloud-native tooling
Experience with Kafka and stream processing frameworks
Experience with Iceberg, Cassandra, and Redis in production services
Experience with serialization and schema tooling
Experience identifying and remediating security vulnerabilities in production services
Full life-cycle development experience for a consumer product
Experience presenting technical and business concepts to executive leadership
Preferred Qualifications: Self-motivated, collaborative, and experienced in fast-paced agile environments
Experience with machine learning systems, frameworks, libraries, and algorithms
Familiarity with deploying and optimizing large-scale AI services requiring GPUs
Experience deploying, serving, and optimizing LLMs or ML models in the transaction or request path
Experience with security, cryptography, identity and access management, and secure token or session lifecycle management
Working knowledge of Go or C++
