Amgen is seeking a Principal Machine Learning Engineer to lead the technical strategy and delivery of enterprise forecasting, large language model, and agentic AI systems for decision support and operational automation. The role combines hands-on machine learning engineering, MLOps, AI architecture, production deployment, and principal-level mentorship across engineering, data science, product, operations, commercial, manufacturing, supply chain, and senior stakeholder groups. Candidates need a degree and 12+ years of experience in machine learning engineering or a related quantitative discipline, along with 10+ years of professional experience building and operating production systems.

Additional Information

Minimum Education: Degree in machine learning engineering, software engineering, data science engineering, or a related quantitative discipline
Required Previous Experiences: 12+ years of experience in machine learning engineering, software engineering, data science engineering, or a related quantitative discipline
10+ years of professional experience building, deploying, and operating production ML, AI, data, or software systems, including significant experience as a technical lead on complex, cross-functional initiatives
Hands-on experience with the full machine learning engineering lifecycle
Experience deploying forecasting, probabilistic, Bayesian, predictive, NLP, deep learning, or LLM-based systems in production environments
Experience building or integrating AI systems, including LLM-powered applications, agentic workflows, retrieval systems, evaluation frameworks, and human-in-the-loop review patterns
Experience with cloud platforms and distributed systems
Ability to communicate technical strategy, system tradeoffs, and delivery risks to technical and non-technical stakeholders
Ability to lead through ambiguity, define technical direction, mentor others, and deliver measurable business value in a matrixed enterprise environment
Preferred Qualifications: Experience building and deploying forecasting, demand planning, supply chain, manufacturing, commercial analytics, or operations decision-support systems in complex regulated or operational environments
Knowledge of healthcare commercial concepts
Experience with AI agent architectures, multi-system orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation, MCP integration patterns, and production LLM serving or optimization platforms
Experience building internal front-end applications, dashboards, workflow tools, or decision-support products
Experience designing guardrails, model and agent evaluation suites, A/B tests, metrics, auditability, explainability, fairness, risk management, and governance controls
Experience influencing enterprise technical standards, architecture roadmaps, reusable platform capabilities, or engineering communities of practice
Publications, patents, open-source contributions, conference presentations, or other evidence of thought leadership in machine learning engineering, forecasting, LLMs, AI systems, MLOps, or decision intelligence
