Microsoft is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to own the architecture and implementation of Copilot’s memory substrate, including storage, schema, write and retrieval paths, lifecycle management, privacy, compliance, and user control. The role partners with Applied Science, product management, and engineering teams across Microsoft 365 and Windows, sets technical direction, and mentors senior engineers. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related technical field and at least 8 years of technical engineering experience, with preferred qualifications including large-scale distributed systems, memory or retrieval systems, LLM systems, and privacy-preserving data systems. The typical U.S. base pay range is USD 165,600–296,400 per year, with higher ranges for the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area.
