Microsoft is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to lead hands-on technical work on VS Code and GitHub Copilot, including architectural improvements, API design, prototype development, debugging, cross-team delivery, engineering effectiveness, and mentorship. The role requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field and at least six years of technical engineering experience with coding in JavaScript, TypeScript, or Rust or equivalent experience. Preferred qualifications include extensive software engineering experience, technical leadership across multiple teams, large TypeScript and Rust codebase experience, platform and API design, product judgment, and mentoring experience. The typical U.S. base pay range is USD 142,800 to USD 274,800 per year, with higher ranges for the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area.
