Description

Instrumentl is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to own AI features end to end, including tool-using LLM agents, APIs, data pipelines, retrieval and evaluation systems, and production reliability. The role requires 7+ years of production backend experience in Python, hands-on LLM feature development, strong data fundamentals, and experience in a fast startup environment. The target compensation for US-based candidates is $175,000–$220,000 USD plus equity, with health, dental, and vision insurance and other benefits.

Additional Information

Required Previous Experiences: 7+ years building and shipping production backend systems in Python, including prototype-to-production delivery and reliability practices
Hands-on experience building production LLM features, including tool and function calling, multi-step agent workflows, guardrails, and evaluations
Strong data fundamentals involving SQL, schema design, and pipelines for retrieval and evaluation
Preferred Qualifications: TypeScript, Node, and Ruby on Rails familiarity
AWS or GCP, Docker, CI/CD, and observability experience
RAG depth, including document ingestion, chunking, embeddings, hybrid search, re-ranking, and grounded citations
Experience with re-rankers, cross-encoders, hybrid retrieval tuning, or search and recommendation systems
Evaluation mindset and experience with RAG/QA, extraction, summarization, and evaluation frameworks
Experience with LangChain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, Semantic Kernel, or custom orchestration
