AI Chatbots Cut Bank Jobs
Commonwealth Bank cuts 45 call center jobs after AI chatbot rollout—first bank to directly attribute layoffs to AI technology.

AI Chatbots Cut Bank Jobs
The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) just drew a clear line between automation and employment. After rolling out a new AI-powered customer service chatbot, the bank cut 45 call center jobs—becoming the first major financial institution to directly link job losses to artificial intelligence.
It’s not about shrinking. It’s about shifting.
CBA currently has 670 open roles across its frontline and retail teams and hired more than 9,000 new employees last year. The bank is also investing $1.3 billion into technology and operations. The message is clear: it’s not a hiring freeze—it’s a workforce redesign.
Not Downsizing—Restructuring
Unlike traditional layoffs driven by profit pressure or market contraction, these cuts reflect how companies are using AI to reshape their support models. CBA’s chatbot now handles high-volume customer queries once managed by humans.
Call center roles—particularly those focused on scripted, repetitive interactions—are at risk as automation becomes the default for Tier-1 customer support. And the rollout is just beginning.
The Union Pushback
The Finance Sector Union is calling for retraining and redeployment programs, arguing that affected employees should be given pathways into new roles rather than pink slips. CBA has stated it’s working on internal redeployment but hasn’t disclosed how many workers will be reassigned.
The shift has renewed questions about how AI adoption should be handled in regulated industries—and what obligations employers have to upskill displaced teams.

The Bigger Picture
A CSIRO report found that 68% of Australian businesses are now using some form of AI—most commonly in customer service. Banks, insurers, telecoms, and government agencies are all experimenting with automation in frontline operations.
What used to be quiet adoption is now happening in public. And when job cuts are explicitly tied to AI, it raises a new urgency for workers in customer support, admin, and operations roles to pivot.
