Lightspeed Workers Get No Breakdown Yet of Which Teams Lose Out in a 250-Role Reduction

Lightspeed says 250 roles are affected by layoffs and vacancies it will not fill, with no split given. Here is what laid-off staff and job seekers can do next.

Lightspeed Commerce Inc., the Montreal-based software company, is removing 250 roles by laying off staff and not filling some vacancies. The company did not break down how many of those jobs were cut compared to how many roles were no longer open, so the number of people who lost a job has not been disclosed. Lightspeed says the cuts are meant to simplify its operations and create room to reinvest in customer growth and product innovations. For Metaintro readers in Montreal tech, or anyone who has just been let go from a software company, this guide explains what the headline figure counts, what is still unknown, how this round compares with earlier Lightspeed cuts, which teams are still posting jobs, and what a laid-off worker in Canada can claim.

What Exactly Has Lightspeed Confirmed?

The core fact is a combined figure. The confirmed figure is 250 roles across the company, including vacant roles that are being closed, described as organizational changes.

Multiple former Lightspeed employees across content and sales roles posted publicly last week that they had been laid off, before the company confirmed the figure.

Lightspeed says the changes will improve operational efficiency and allow reinvestment.

Why Is a Cut Role Not the Same as a Layoff?

A role is a seat on the organization chart. Some seats had a person in them and some were open jobs waiting to be filled. Lightspeed counted both kinds together, saying 250 roles will be impacted as the company lays off staff and opts to not fill some vacancies.

That makes the headline number an upper limit for layoffs, not a count of them. With no split published, 250 roles across the company were impacted, and an unknown share of those were empty seats.

The vacancy part matters for job seekers too. A closed vacancy is an open role that will no longer be filled.

Closing open roles alongside layoffs is not new at Lightspeed. In the January 2023 round, the company closed many non-essential open roles while still hiring for others.

While we’ve closed many ‘non-essential’ open roles, we’re still hiring many positions so we can keep pace with our objectives, then chief executive JP Chauvet told staff in January 2023, according to the Payments Dive brief.

Which Teams Were Hit, and When Will Lightspeed Say More?

The company has not named the teams. Spokesperson Stephanie Princivil did not answer questions about what areas of the company the layoffs and removal of vacancies targeted. Former employees who posted about being laid off worked in content and sales roles.

More detail is promised with the next results, due on Nov. 5 with its fiscal second-quarter earnings. Second quarter 2027 results are scheduled for release before the market open on Thursday, November 5, 2026, with a conference call at 8:00 am ET that day.

Until then, any split between layoffs and closed vacancies, any team breakdown, and any severance terms are unknown. Nothing about severance amounts appears in the Canadian Press story or the BetaKit story.

How Did the Coverage Frame the Cuts Differently?

Headlines framed the same facts in slightly different ways. One English headline keeps both parts of the figure in view: Lightspeed cuts 250 roles by laying off staff, not filling vacancies.

A French headline gives only the total, La compagnie de logiciels montréalaise Lightspeed supprime 250 postes (translated, Montreal software company Lightspeed eliminates 250 positions), and the vacancy detail arrives in the first paragraph. The Le Devoir story opens with Lightspeed procédant à des licenciements et choisissant de ne pas pourvoir certains postes vacants (translated, carrying out layoffs and choosing not to fill some vacant positions).

A third headline speaks of organizational changes rather than a number, and that story adds three things the wire copy lacks. It ties the news to the former staff posts, it gives the exact results date, and it adds roughly 100 job cuts earlier this year on top of this round.

Is This the First Time Lightspeed Has Cut Jobs?

No. Lightspeed has made several staffing cuts over the last few years, and the rounds are on the record.

These counts were measured differently from round to round (jobs, roles, employees), so adding them up would mislead. Each round is shown as the company or the outlet described it at the time.

Company size gives two of these rounds a scale. As of March 31, 2024, Lightspeed had approximately 3,000 employees, so the second 2024 round was set to impact about seven percent of the company. Earlier this year, in its fiscal first quarter, Lightspeed cut headcount by three percent, affecting roughly 100 jobs.

When Dax Dasilva returned as chief executive, he said the new phase meant making some hard decisions, like reducing spending in specific areas such as headcount, to allow for investments in others.

The second 2024 round came with a hiring note. After those layoffs, the company said it was actively hiring in its product and technology teams, as well as specific go-to-market roles. Head of investor relations Gus Papageorgiou said Lightspeed will be focusing on retail in North America and hospitality in Europe, and that any department impacted by the layoffs was outside of those two areas.

These decisions support Lightspeed’s long-term objective of growing responsibly and profitably so we can continue to invest in our business, our products, and the customers we serve, a Lightspeed spokesperson wrote about the latest round, according to the BetaKit story.

How Does the Upserve Sale Fit Into the Plan?

The cuts sit inside a narrower strategy. Founded in 2005, Lightspeed sells point-of-sale and commerce software and hardware to restaurants, retailers, and hospitality providers. A strategic review concluded last year with no go-private transaction, and the company chose to double down on its North American retail and European hospitality divisions and sell Upserve, a restaurant management business.

The sale terms add detail the wire copy skips. Lightspeed sold the Upserve product line to Skyview Equity for total cash consideration of up to $81 million USD, $37 million of which is subject to an earnout. The deal covers ~3,200 U.S. hospitality Customer Locations.

For workers, the key line is about people. The sale includes ~70 employees, who are expected to join Skyview in connection with the sale, so those staff were expected to move with the business to Skyview.

Dax Dasilva called the sale "another step towards focusing Lightspeed on the markets where we have the strongest right to win". The company has also told The Globe and Mail that it is open to more divestitures.

The share price is part of the background. The share price peaked at $159 CAD on the Toronto Stock Exchange in September 2021 and now hovers around $15 CAD.

Is Lightspeed Still Hiring After the Cuts?

Yes, on its own careers page. The Lightspeed careers page currently shows openings grouped by department, including Sales 49 jobs, Operations 17 jobs and Technology 15 jobs, along with smaller counts in Product 7 jobs and Marketing 6 jobs. Those counts can change, so check the live page.

Describing the fiscal first quarter cuts, Dax Dasilva said they were made to find efficiencies in the business, and that Lightspeed was continuing to hire.

There is also a scam warning worth reading. All legitimate Lightspeed roles are posted at lightspeedhq.com/careers, and the company will never ask candidates to pay fees, purchase equipment, transfer money, share banking details early in the process, or accept an offer without a formal interview process. Check any recruiter outreach against that page.

What Can a Laid-Off Lightspeed Worker in Canada Claim From EI?

The full eligibility criteria for EI regular benefits, including the number of insurable hours you need and what you must complete during a claim, are listed on the federal eligibility page. Read that page in full as you apply. Ottawa encourages people to apply for Employment Insurance (EI) benefits as soon as possible and let the department decide eligibility.

The payment is capped. For most people the basic rate is 55% of their average insurable weekly earnings, up to a maximum amount, and from January 1, 2026 the ceiling means a maximum amount of $729 a week. Benefits run from 14 weeks up to a maximum of 45 weeks, depending on regional unemployment and your hours.

What This Means for Montreal Tech Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

The figure that matters is not yet public. The 250 roles have not been broken down into layoffs and closed vacancies, and Lightspeed has promised more details on Nov. 5. Treat any claim that every affected role was a layoff with caution.

At least two earlier rounds paired cuts with continued hiring in chosen areas, from closed non-essential open roles in 2023 to active hiring in product and technology after the 2024 cuts. The company now names North American retail and European hospitality as its focus, so work tied to those two businesses is where the company has chosen to double down.

If you were let go:

If you are applying to Lightspeed, read the current careers page for live openings, check that any recruiter contact matches it, and ask in interviews whether the role sits in retail or hospitality. In September, employment in Canada fell by 68,000, as the Statistics Canada Labour Force Survey shows, and course platform Thinkific has also cut jobs as it shifts toward enterprise clients.
