Meta is letting go of employees it hired from AI safety startup Virtue AI four months after they joined the company in June, and a Meta spokesperson put it down to clashing work styles. The group had been hired as a discrete team rather than an entire company. This guide looks at what a worker can check before joining as part of a team. It is written for AI researchers, security engineers and startup staff who may be offered a move into a big tech lab as part of a team. For Metaintro readers, the practical detail sits in the rule books, in the U.S. Department of Labor guidance on severance, and, for people employed in California, in the final pay rules of California's Labor Commissioner and in how the state treats noncompete clauses. Here is the story first, then the terms to check.

What Did Meta Say About Letting the Virtue AI Team Go?

Meta disclosed the exit in an Oct 2, 2026 Semafor exclusive. The employees Meta is letting go joined the company in June, which puts the arrangement at four months. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone gave clashing work styles as the reason, adding that Meta Superintelligence Labs remains focused on AI safety, alignment and frontier risk.

No headcount for the departures has been given. The Virtue AI team did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The exit comes amid new calls for regulation in Washington.

Unfortunately, the arrangement didn’t work out as planned, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said, according to the Semafor exclusive on the exit.

Who Joined Meta From Virtue AI in June, and Where Did They Report?

The hiring was reported on Jun 25, 2026. Meta Superintelligence Labs was hiring three founders and other team members behind AI security startup Virtue AI, with co-founders Bo Li, Dawn Song and Sanmi Koyejo, leaders in AI security, joining the lab. The hires also included members of Virtue AI's broader team, which builds enterprise AI security tools spanning automated red teaming, runtime guardrails and AI governance.

Li and Song were set to report into Nat Friedman, a Meta Superintelligence Lab executive, and Koyejo into Rob Fergus, head of FAIR, Meta's fundamental AI research lab. The terms of the arrangement were not disclosed.

In an internal memo, Meta called keeping those systems safe, reliable, and trustworthy foundational as it ships AI products to billions of people and builds increasingly capable agents.

What Skills Did the Virtue AI Team Bring?

Dawn Song is a professor in the Division of Computer Science at UC Berkeley, with research covering secure deep learning and artificial intelligence, computer security, privacy and applied cryptography. Sanmi Koyejo leads the Stanford Trustworthy AI Research (STAIR) lab, which works on AI evaluation science, algorithmic accountability and privacy-preserving machine learning.

Koyejo's honours include the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship. Song's work has won the ACM CCS Test-of-Time Award with David Wagner.

Virtue AI had previously done work with Anthropic, OpenAI and the Commerce Department's NIST. It raised $30 million in seed and Series A funding in 2025.

What Happened to Virtue AI the Company?

Fortinet announced on Aug 17, 2026 that it had acquired Virtue AI, describing it as an innovator in AI runtime protection, automated AI validation and security for autonomous AI systems. Virtue AI's technology is set to enhance the Fortinet AI-Native Security Fabric and complement its FortiAIGate product.

Financial terms were not disclosed, and the amount paid was immaterial to Fortinet's business. Meta, the co-founders and any staff numbers are absent from the Fortinet announcement.

In June, Meta hired a discrete team as opposed to an entire company, and on Aug 17 Fortinet announced it had acquired Virtue AI. In this case three of the founders and the team Meta hired went to one employer, while the company and its technology went to another.

Fortinet believes the anticipated market expansion reflects industry demand, citing a July 2026 Gartner report, Forecasting the $16.4 Billion Opportunity in Securing AI, which says products and tools for securing AI ecosystems and agents are expected to expand from $2.8 billion in 2026 to $16.4 billion by 2030.

How Common Are Team Hires Like This One?

The Virtue AI move was the latest example of hiring a discrete team as opposed to an entire company. In March, Meta hired the founders and team behind Dreamer, an AI startup focused on helping people build agents.

In a related licence-and-hire structure, Groq entered a licensing agreement with Nvidia for its inference technology in December, and Groq founder and CEO Jonathan Ross and president Sunny Madra joined Nvidia along with other senior leaders. Approximately 150 to 200 Groq engineers became Nvidia employees as part of the deal, according to the lawsuit filed over it.

In an email to staff, Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang described the deal as adding talented employees and licensing Groq's IP while not acquiring Groq as a company.

What Does the Groq Lawsuit Say About Licence-and-Hire Deals?

Two former Groq engineers, Joshua Rubin and Benjamin Serebrin, filed suit on Oct. 2 at the Court of Chancery of the State of Delaware, alleging the deal offered stockholders a lowball price. Both left Groq before its Nvidia deal became public but held stock in the company.

The complaint alleges that Nvidia put $17 billion toward a license labelled non-exclusive and set aside $3 billion of restricted stock units for the Groq employees who moved with the technology. It also alleges that Groq's board sold the company to Nvidia without the stockholder vote Delaware law requires.

Groq rejects the claims, and a Groq spokesperson called the lawsuit meritless and said the company will vigorously defend itself, and Groq said it would continue as an independent company and has raised around $1 billion since June, from investors including Nvidia.

Are You Owed Severance When a Team Hire Ends Early?

Not automatically, because there is no requirement in the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) for severance pay, and severance is a matter of agreement between an employer and an employee or the employee's representative. Severance is usually based on length of employment, which can work against anyone let go after a few months.

If your employer runs a severance plan and you did not receive benefits under it, the Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA) may be able to assist. That help is for severance benefits under an employer-sponsored plan.

Severance pay is a matter of agreement between an employer and an employee (or the employee's representative), according to the Department of Labor severance page.

The practical step is to put severance into the offer letter before you move, using a recent plan such as the one in Laid Off by Oracle This Week? What Its Severance Plan Paid in the Last Round as a benchmark.

When Must Final Pay Arrive for Workers in California?

Where the Virtue AI staff were based has not been reported in the October exit story or the June hiring story, so the California rules below apply only to people employed in California. In California, an employee who is discharged must be paid all of his or her wages, including accrued vacation, immediately at the time of termination. The place of the final wage payment for employees who are terminated (or laid off) is the place of termination.

An employer who willfully fails to pay on time may be assessed a waiting time penalty equal to the employee's daily rate of pay for each day the wages remain unpaid, up to a maximum of thirty (30) calendar days. Even in a dispute, the employer must pay, without requiring a release, whatever wages are due and not in dispute.

If commissions were earned on or before termination, the employer must complete the necessary calculations and pay the commissions on the date of the termination in the case of a discharge. For equity and severance, check the terms in your contract.

Can a Noncompete Follow You Out of a Team Hire?

For California workers, generally not, since noncompete agreements are not enforceable in California, and under section 16600.5 of the Business and Professions Code a contract that is void under the state's restraint of trade rules is unenforceable regardless of where and when it was signed, and an employer or former employer shall not attempt to enforce it. In a March 2022 alert, the state Attorney General's office reminded employers and workers that noncompete agreements are not enforceable in California. The office asked workers who have been wrongly presented with, or have entered into, a noncompete to report it immediately at oag.ca.gov/report.

Nationally the clauses are widespread, affecting an estimated 20-25% of the nation's labor force in a figure cited in a March 2022 release from the Attorney General's office. They are often buried in fine print, and sometimes added after a worker has accepted a job or started work.

Founders who sell their business are one exception, since under section 16601 of the Business and Professions Code, a person who sells the goodwill of a business, or an owner disposing of all of his or her ownership interest, may agree with the buyer to refrain from carrying on a similar business within a specified geographic area in which the business so sold has been carried on. That carve-out applies so long as the buyer, or a person deriving title from the buyer, carries on a like business there.

What This Means for Tech Workers, and What Should You Do Next?

Our take is that a team hire is a job offer first and a vote of confidence second. Meta brought the Virtue AI group in with a memo about safety being foundational, and the arrangement is still ending after four months over work styles. Prestige on the way in does not protect anyone on the way out. The contract, and the wage law where you work, do.

Here is what we would do before accepting a move as part of a team:

  • Get severance in writing. Federal wage law has no severance requirement, so a minimum payout for an early exit belongs in the offer letter, not in a verbal promise.
  • Ask what happens to your startup shares. In the Groq case, two former engineers who held stock allege the deal offered stockholders a lowball price and that $3 billion of Nvidia restricted stock units was set aside for the employees who moved. Find out whether your old equity is being bought, left in place or cancelled.
  • Read the vesting schedule on any new grant. If a grant vests only after a year, nothing vests for someone let go in the fourth month. Before you sign, read the equity grant, vesting schedule and any clawback language, the same checklist used in How to Negotiate a Job Offer After You Have It in Writing.
  • Check any restriction you sign as a founder. If you sell all your ownership interest, section 16601 lets you agree with the buyer not to run a similar business in the area where it operated, as long as the buyer carries on a like business there, even in California.
  • Know your final pay rights. In California, a discharged worker is owed all wages, including accrued vacation, immediately.
  • Keep your options warm. Keep your network and portfolio current while you are inside a big lab, so an early exit does not start your search from zero.
