Moderna Cuts 10% of Workforce

Moderna—the biotech company that became a household name during the pandemic—is entering a new phase. The company announced a sweeping 10% workforce reduction, a move that will bring its total employee count to fewer than 5,000 by the end of 2025.

CEO Stéphane Bancel confirmed the restructuring in a message to staff, framing it as part of a larger push toward financial sustainability as Moderna adapts to life after COVID-era vaccine demand.

Resetting After the Peak

The company’s meteoric rise during 2020–2022 was fueled by billions in revenue from its mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine. That rapid expansion came with equally rapid hiring across research, manufacturing, and commercial teams.

Now, with COVID shot sales returning to baseline and government contracts drying up, the company is facing hard choices. Its new target? $1.5 billion in cost savings by 2027.

“Every effort was made to avoid affecting jobs,” Bancel wrote. “But this realignment is essential to ensure we remain focused and financially disciplined.”

Where Moderna Is Headed

Despite the cuts, Moderna is doubling down on its scientific pipeline. The company currently has three approved products on the market and expects up to eight new approvals within the next 12 months, spanning therapeutic areas far beyond respiratory disease.

Among its top priorities are:

  • Oncology: Experimental mRNA-based cancer vaccines in partnership with Merck
  • Rare diseases: Including genetic disorders like Crigler-Najjar syndrome
  • Latent viruses: Such as cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr, and others

The company also received FDA approval for its next-gen COVID booster in May, but it’s clear that COVID is no longer the core of Moderna’s business model.

What This Means for Biotech Workers

Moderna’s cuts are part of a larger reset across the biotech sector. Companies that scaled quickly during the pandemic are now recalibrating in the face of falling revenues and rising costs. For professionals in the space, the shift means fewer roles in mass vaccine production and more focus on precision medicine, clinical trials, and early-stage drug development.

The workforce Moderna retains will likely be more specialized, with an emphasis on translational research and regulatory strategy. Talent in AI-driven drug discovery and personalized therapeutics may see new openings as the company reallocates resources.

Moderna’s message is clear: the pandemic boom is over—but the mRNA era is just beginning.
