Mirror Publisher Reach Cuts 220 Editorial Jobs After Google Traffic Fell 46%
Reach is cutting 220 editorial jobs and adding 60 after Google traffic fell 46%. What the 45 day consultation, redundancy pay and the new roles mean for staff.

Reach, the publisher of the Daily Mirror and Daily Express, plans around 220 full time equivalent editorial redundancies while creating 60 roles, a net loss of around 160 jobs. The stated reason is traffic, with Google traffic down 46% on last year as AI answers more questions without a click. If you are one of the journalists in scope, the headline number matters less than three things the news coverage skips: what the consultation must include, what you are owed, and how to get one of the new jobs. At Metaintro we read these announcements against the company's own filings and the actual redundancy rules, and that is what this piece does.
How Many Jobs Are Going, and How Many Are Being Created?
The gross and net figures are different, and mixing them up is the easiest mistake to make with this story.
The editorial cut is 220 jobs, with about 60 editorial roles created to drive digital revenue growth. Those figures are gross rather than a final count of leavers, and the roughly 160 fewer posts is the net effect.
Editorial is not the only function in scope. About 65 commercial jobs are also expected to go, and the editorial cuts reach journalists across print, digital and video.
Three titles close entirely. KentLive, AberdeenLive and GalwayBeo are shutting because they were not achieving the scale required. Reach has not yet said where the rest of the cuts fall, and the National Union of Journalists is seeking clarity on that point.
Ireland is part of this too. Across Ireland, north and south, approximately a dozen journalists face redundancy.
What Do Reach's Own Results Show About the Traffic Loss?
The best evidence is not the memo. It is the half year results Reach filed on 22 July, which put hard numbers on the damage two months before any jobs were named.
Google referral volumes fell 55% year on year, contributing to a 40% decline in on-platform audience. Digital revenue dropped 11.4% to £54.2m, down from £61.1m a year earlier. Group revenue for the half fell 9.0% to £232.9 million.
The line that matters most for staff sits in the cost table. Labour accounts for half the adjusted cost base and had already fallen 9.8%, mainly from the restructure in the second half of 2025. When revenue falls and half your costs are people, headcount is where the next saving comes from.
Google referral volumes fell 55% year on year and contributed to a 40% decline in Reach's on-platform audience.
Causation deserves care. The available evidence does not isolate the contribution of AI summaries to the traffic loss, and print circulation volumes also fell 22% in the same period. AI search is better read as the accelerant on a decline that was already under way.
Two traffic figures are circulating, and they measure different things. The fall of 46% on last year comes from the staff memo, while the filing's 55% drop covers Google referral volumes in the first half compared with the first half of 2025. Both point the same way, and neither is a one-off dip.
A regulatory response is under way, though it will not save these jobs. In June the Competition and Markets Authority decided that Google must let publishers opt out of AI results without affecting their search ranking, with the controls expected to arrive within nine months.
Where Are the New Jobs, and What Do They Look Like?
This is the useful part for anyone who wants to stay. The same filing spells out what Reach is building, and the 60 new roles follow it.
Subscriptions are the first growth area. Reach has launched digital subscriptions across 15 brands, with over 40,000 paid subscribers against an annual target of 75,000. Those are retention jobs, built around keeping a paying reader rather than winning a passing click.
Video is the second. Studio revenues rose 73% and off-platform revenues doubled, while the Daily Expresso became June's most watched UK news podcast on YouTube. Social video views were up 55% as well.
Tools are the third. A new platform called Launchpad combines generative AI, video creation and analytics for journalists, and the company is pursuing AI licensing deals. Anyone applying internally should expect the new roles to assume fluency with tools like that.
The editorial direction is explicit. Newsrooms are moving to less emphasis on story volume and more on original journalism and distinctive brands. Writing that an AI summary can replicate is the writing being cut.
What Must Happen During the Consultation?
A collective consultation is not a formality, and knowing the rules is what lets you use it.
Collective rules apply whenever an employer proposes 20 or more redundancies at the same time. With 100 or more, the consultation must start at least 45 days before any dismissals take effect, which matches the minimum 45 day consultation Reach has begun.
The consultation must cover ways to avoid redundancies, how to keep dismissals to a minimum and how to limit the effect on those involved, for example by offering retraining. It runs through a trade union rep or an elected employee rep, and if you are affected you can stand for election as a rep or vote for others.
Before any of that, the employer should tell affected staff as soon as possible which roles are at risk, why, and how everyone will be consulted, and it should do so in writing, for example in a letter or email.
The employer also owes representatives written details of the reasons, the numbers and categories of staff involved, how people will be selected and how redundancy payments will be worked out. At 100 or more redundancies it must notify the Redundancy Payments Service on form HR1 at least 45 days before the first dismissal.
Selection has limits. You must be chosen fairly, and you cannot be selected because of age, gender, disability or pregnancy. You should also be told in writing which roles are at risk and whether options such as voluntary redundancy are available.
The union has already set out its approach. The NUJ is seeking a detailed breakdown of the proposals and will be engaging in formal consultations next month. In Ireland, a collective process will be followed by individual redundancy consultation meetings.
What Redundancy Pay and Notice Are Affected Journalists Owed?
Statutory pay depends on age and service. After two years with an employer you get half a week's pay for each full year under 22, one week's pay for each year from 22 to 40, and one and a half weeks' pay for each year at 41 or older.
There are two caps. Service counts for a maximum of 20 years, and for redundancies on or after 6 April 2026 weekly pay is capped at £751, which puts the statutory maximum at £22,530. You have 6 months from the date your job ends to apply.
Notice is separate from redundancy pay. The statutory minimum is one week for each year of service between two and twelve years, rising to 12 weeks' notice after 12 years, and your contract can give more but never less. Many media contracts do, so read yours before any meeting.
Statutory redundancy pay is capped at £751 a week and £22,530 in total for redundancies on or after 6 April 2026.
GalwayBeo staff are under Irish law, which works differently. The Irish statutory payment is two weeks' pay for every year of service plus one extra week, with weekly pay capped at €600, and it is tax free.
One group has fewer protections. Redundancy rights apply to employees, and agency workers and casual or zero hours workers are unlikely to qualify. Reach has also cut budgets for non-staff to avoid compulsory redundancies, which means freelancers were hit before staff.
Can You Move Into One of the New Roles?
Possibly, and the law gives you room to try. Your employer might offer suitable alternative employment, judged on how similar the work is, the pay, status, hours and location, and your skills.
You get a 4 week trial period in any alternative job, which can be extended for training if agreed in writing first. If it is not suitable and you say so within the trial, you keep your right to redundancy pay. Refusing a genuinely suitable offer without good reason can cost you that pay.
You are also entitled to reasonable paid time off to look for work if you have two years' service, though the employer only has to pay up to 40% of one week's pay for it.
What Is the Union Arguing?
The union's case is that the cuts undermine the strategy they are meant to fund. Reach remains profitable, having promised a £96 million operating profit this year despite £60 million a year in pension deficit payments.
Laura Davison, the NUJ general secretary, called the cuts an act of self-sabotage, arguing that repeated rounds have left members facing unsustainable workloads. The half year filing shows a rebased interim dividend of 1.44 pence a share, which is the payout the union wants weighed against jobs.
The people who stay are part of the argument. The NUJ wants Reach to carry out a workload and stress risk assessment on remaining staff, and in July the Reach chapel unanimously called on the board to halt further mass redundancies.
This is also not the first round. A year ago about 600 editorial roles were at risk and more than 300 jobs were lost.
What This Means for Your Next Move, and How Should You Prepare?
If you are in scope, the consultation window is your most valuable asset, so use it early. Ask your rep for the written selection criteria, the list of new roles and the redundancy pay method, all of which the employer has to put in writing. Apply for the new posts in the first week rather than the last, because redeployment is easiest before notices go out.
If you stay, plan for a heavier load. The union's warning about unsustainable workloads after earlier rounds is the best guide to what the remaining newsroom will feel like, so ask in consultation how the work of departing colleagues will be covered.
Build evidence for where the money is going. Reach is funding subscriptions, video and AI tooling, so a story that demonstrably drove sign ups, or a video with retention data, is stronger in an internal interview than a byline count.
Check your contract before you check the calculator. Statutory pay is a floor, and contractual notice or enhanced terms often beat it, particularly for long serving staff.
If you are outside Reach, read this as a warning about dependence rather than about writing. Any content job that earns its keep by winning a search click faces the same pressure, whether it is a marketing blog, an affiliate site or a knowledge base. The jobs holding up are the ones built on an audience that arrives deliberately, and the skills that go with them are original reporting, video and keeping readers who pay.
