Bluepoint Games Hiring for New Melee Action Game Before Shutdown

The studio that brought PlayStation classics back to life looked ready to build something new. Bluepoint Games, the team behind critically acclaimed remakes of Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, posted job listings in October 2025 for a new third-person action game built around melee combat. The studio did not say whether the project was a new IP or another remake.

Update, February 2026: Sony plans to close Bluepoint in March 2026, and around 70 employees could be laid off, Shacknews reported on February 19, 2026.

This is a big deal for anyone who's watched Bluepoint work. The Austin-based studio built its reputation on technical wizardry and artistic reverence, taking beloved games and rebuilding them from scratch while honoring every detail fans cherished. Their 2020 Demon's Souls remake for PlayStation 5 launched with the console and became a showcase for what the new hardware could do.

The new job listings suggested the studio was ready to move beyond remakes, though Bluepoint never announced its next project.

The listings, reported by GamingBolt on October 14, 2025, included a Senior Combat Designer and a Senior Level Designer. The combat role asked for a solid understanding of combat systems and mechanics for 3rd-person melee action experiences. For game developers tired of working on someone else's vision, this looked like a chance to help shape a studio's next big project.

Why This Hiring Matters for Gaming's Future

Bluepoint's hiring push came at a tense moment for the studio. Its previous assignment, a live-service God of War game, was cancelled by Sony in January 2025. The new listings suggested specialized studios with proven track records were still recruiting senior talent, but the 2026 closure plan shows that even respected teams are not safe from cuts.

For Bluepoint, owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment since 2021, this project looked like a way to add variety to PlayStation's first-party lineup. Sony has leaned heavily on established franchises like God of War, The Last of Us, and Spider-Man. A new action game from a trusted studio could have become another major franchise.

Third-person melee combat is a crowded space, but it's also where some of gaming's most successful titles live. God of War's 2018 reboot had sold over 23 million units by late 2022, according to Sony. Players have proven they'll show up for tight combat systems wrapped in compelling worlds, which is exactly what Bluepoint showed it could deliver through its remake work.

What Makes Bluepoint Different

Most game studios specialize in either technical execution or creative vision. Bluepoint has consistently demonstrated both. Their Shadow of the Colossus remake for PlayStation 4 rebuilt the game's look while keeping the weight and timing that made the original's boss battles memorable. That's the kind of attention to detail that separates good studios from great ones.

The studio's small size (around 70 employees) has been both limitation and strength. They can't produce multiple games simultaneously like giant publishers, but that focused approach means everyone contributes directly to the final product. There's no bureaucratic bloat, no endless approval chains, no creative death by committee.

For developers considering the opportunity, the appeal extends beyond just working on a new project. Bluepoint's Austin base also put developers in a city with a growing game development scene, away from the San Francisco and Seattle areas where many large studios cluster.

Bluepoint set an incredibly high bar with its remakes, and fans hoped to see what an original project from the team would look like. With Sony now planning to close the studio, developers who joined or applied for these roles face a job search of their own.
