The Tamil Nadu government has approved the recruitment of 8,000 field assistants in Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (TNPDCL) over the next two years, with 5,000 posts planned for 2027 and the remaining 3,000 posts for 2028. The posts will be filled through direct recruitment conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC), the state body whose press release page tracks each recruitment stage. Basic pay for the new posts is fixed at Rs 18,800, with a pay scale of Rs 18,800 to Rs 59,900 (about $197 to $629). Applications are not open yet, because the official recruitment notification with qualifications, age limits and dates is still awaited. For Metaintro readers in Tamil Nadu who hold an electrical trade certificate, the last field assistant round shows how TNPSC ran the process, which began with a notification dated 03.09.2025 and reached the physical test list in August 2026, and its rules are set out below.

What Did Tamil Nadu Approve on October 28?

The Energy Department issued a government order on October 28 that permits TNPDCL to fill 5,000 field assistant posts in 2027 and the remaining 3,000 in 2028.

The order also sets out the cost. The recruitment is expected to involve an annual financial commitment of about ₹3.4126 billion (about $35.8 million). The estimated expenditure is ₹2.1328 billion (about $22.4 million) for the 5,000 appointments in 2027 and ₹1.2797 billion (about $13.4 million) for the 3,000 appointments in 2028.

The electricity board chairman had reportedly submitted a proposal to the state government outlining the recruitment requirement and the estimated salary bill, and the government approved the posts after reviewing it.

In July 2024, another request was made to fill 8,400 posts, including 400 assistant engineers and 8,000 field assistants, but the order that came in 2025 answered a smaller June 2025 proposal, set out below.

What Will a Field Assistant Earn?

The government has fixed the basic pay for field assistants at Rs 18,800 (about $197). That matches the last round, where the post sat at pay Level 2 on the same scale, under CPS.

The total cost of each worker is higher than the basic pay. The estimated monthly expenditure per employee, including allowances and the employer's contribution to the Contributory Pension Scheme, is Rs 35,548 (about $373). That figure is the employer's cost estimate, not a take-home salary, and it includes the pension contribution the employer pays on top of pay.

In the last notification, CPS was spelled out as Contributory Pension Scheme, and the same scheme is named in the new cost estimate.

For comparison, when TNPDCL decided in November 2025 to hire temporary monsoon workers, they were to be paid by the day under the Public Works Department's schedule of rates, at a daily wage of Rs 716 (about $7.51), with the engagement set to last until January 31, 2026. The field assistant post comes with a pay scale and an employer pension contribution instead of a day rate.

Why Is TNPDCL Hiring So Many Field Staff?

Across TNPDCL, Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Ltd (TANTRANSCO), Tamil Nadu Power Generation Corporation Ltd (TNPGCL) and Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd (TNGECL), there are 65,921 vacant posts against a combined sanctioned strength of 140,635.

TNPDCL carries most of that gap. It has 53,575 posts lying vacant against its sanctioned strength of 110,960, while TANTRANSCO has 7,851 vacant posts, TNPGCL (3,075) and TNGECL (1,420).

When the state approved the last round through the July 31 order, an office bearer of the Central Organisation of Tamil Nadu Electricity Employees said that as against the sanctioned 51,276 posts in field assistant categories, nearly 40,000 posts remain vacant, and he added that direct recruitment for field assistants occurs after 17 years, since 24,600 personnel were recruited in 2008-09.

Many a time, accidents happen due to the work pressure, an office bearer of the Central Organisation of Tamil Nadu Electricity Employees said, according to the DT Next report on the July 31 order.

The utility has also used short-term help. In November 2025, TNPDCL operated around 2,800 section offices, and under its monsoon plan, each section office in vulnerable coastal and high-risk areas was permitted to appoint up to four temporary workers, while other section offices could hire two.

How Did the Last Field Assistant Recruitment Work?

An Energy Department order issued on July 31 allowed 400 assistant engineers (electrical) and 1,850 field assistants (trainees) to be recruited through TNPSC, as reported in August 2025. TNPSC then issued Notification No.13 / 2025 dated 03.09.2025 under the Combined Technical Services Examination (ITI Level) - II.

There were 1,794 vacancies for Field Assistant, post code 3749, in TNPDCL, after vacancies for reservation to outstanding sportspersons were deducted. Applications closed on 02.10.2025 at 11:59 PM, and the written exam was held on 16.11.2025 F.N. & A.N. by the computer based test method.

TNPSC published mark and rank positions for 14,221 candidates in a press release dated 09.04.2026. The commission then released a list of candidates shortlisted for onscreen certificate verification for recruitment to Field Assistant posts in May 2026.

The physical test stage came next. TNPSC released the list of candidates provisionally admitted to Physical Test for the post of Field Assistant in August 2026, in press release 102/2026.

Who Was Eligible in the Last Round?

The trade certificate was the gate. Candidates had to possess National Trade Certificate / National Apprenticeship Certificate awarded by the National Council for Training and Vocational Trade in any one of these trades, Electrician, Wireman or Electrical Trade under Centre of Excellence Scheme. The candidate had to possess the educational qualification and technical qualification prescribed for the post, on the date of notification.

Candidates who have not possessed National Trade Certificate / National Apprenticeship Certificate in the Trades of Electrician / Wireman / Electrical are not eligible for the post of Field Assistant in Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited even though they possess higher qualification, according to TNPSC's field assistant notification.

Age was counted as on 01.07.2025. The limits differed by community and category, with concessions, exceptions and a separate restriction on candidates already in government service, and the full age rules are set out in sections 4.1 and 4.5 of the notification.

Fitness and language also counted. Selected candidates had to submit a certificate of physical fitness to the Appointing Authority at the time of joining the post and meet a vision standard of Standard III or better, and candidates with defective vision had to produce an Eye Fitness certificate from a qualified Eye Specialist working in a Government Hospital at the time of joining the post. Candidates also had to possess adequate knowledge in Tamil on the date of this Notification, and the ways to prove it, along with the language test rule for those who could not, are set out in section 4.4 of the notification.

What Did the Written Exam Look Like?

The exam was a single stage written examination with two compulsory papers on one day. Paper I covered Tamil Eligibility Test, General Studies, Aptitude and Mental Ability, and Paper II was the trade paper, Trade: Electrician and Wireman, set at I.T.I standard in English and Tamil.

In the last round, the Tamil part worked as a filter, and the rest of the exam was evaluated only if the candidate secured minimum qualifying marks of 40% (i.e., 60 Marks) in Part A of Paper I. Differently abled candidates could avail exemption from writing Part A in Paper I, but only if they furnished the required details in the online application, with no later claim accepted, and uploaded the disability certificate in the format prescribed in Annexure II at the time of applying.

Ranking rested on the written exam alone. The merit list or ranking list was prepared on the basis of total marks secured by the candidates in the written examination, and the marks obtained in Part B and Part C of Paper I and Paper II determined final ranking. If two candidates tied, the one possessing the higher qualification shall be placed above in the merit list. If the qualification was also the same, the candidate senior in age went higher, and if age was the same too, the candidate who submitted his application earlier to the Commission went higher.

Shortlisting then narrowed the field. Candidates were admitted to onscreen certificate verification in the ratio of 1:5, and those cleared there went to the physical test in 1:3 ratio.

What Was in the Last Field Assistant Physical Test?

In the last round, the physical test was run by the utility itself, conducted by the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited at 12 regions, and candidates picked one region from a list that included Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Thanjavur.

There were three timed activities, Activity I on pole climbing and cross arm fixing, Activity II on plaiting rope with conductor, and Activity III on lifting and carrying cross arms, and each step of all three is set out in section 5.6 of the notification. Only candidates who passed the physical test were considered for the next stage of selection process.

The test norms were originally prescribed in a March 10, 2020, proceeding of the erstwhile Tangedco, and the pole climb rules changed in June 2026. TNPDCL amended the physical test norms to let candidates use pole-climbing shoes, and its board also chose to relax the requirement of fixing a wooden support for the footrest for those who wear them instead of climbing barefoot. Employee unions said the change would improve safety and align the recruitment process with modern field practices.

When Will Applications Open, and Where Will the Notice Appear?

The approval covers posts across 2027 and 2028, but no application dates are out yet, and candidates will need to wait for the official recruitment notification for qualifications, age limits, selection steps and application dates.

The notice will come from TNPSC, whose press release page already tracks each stage of past rounds. In the last round, the commission published the written examination results, venue, date and time of Physical Test on the Commission's website, sent no letters by post, and informed candidates only through SMS and e-mail to the registered mobile number and email ID.

In the last round, applying ran through One Time Registration, where a candidate registered once by paying Rs.150/- as registration fee (about $1.57), and the registration was valid for five years from the date of registration. Linking the Aadhaar number with One Time Registration (OTR) was mandatory. The exam fee was Rs.100 (Rupees One hundred only) (about $1.05), unless exemption of fee was claimed, and the special categories eligible for that exemption are listed in the notification.

TNPSC runs other state recruitments too, such as the one behind Tamil Nadu's list of tentative government job vacancies.

What Did TNPDCL Change for Retired Staff the Same Week?

Alongside the new posts, the utility set new contract pay for retired officials. TNPDCL issued proceedings on October 27 that set fixed monthly pay for retired officials appointed on contract, citing a shortage of staff in some offices.

The rates depend on the post held. Retired officials appointed as assistant audit officers, assistant engineers, junior engineers Grade-I, private secretaries, section officers and superintendents will receive Rs 40,000 a month (about $420). At the top, chief engineers, chief financial controllers and chief internal audit officers get a standardised monthly remuneration fixed at ₹125,000 (about $1,312).

These are contract roles for former staff, not openings for new job seekers. Retired personnel were already being engaged on a contract basis as officers on special duty, consultants and special officers, and the new structure is intended to bring uniformity to their pay across offices.

What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

For people with an electrical trade certificate in Tamil Nadu, this approval is far larger than the last field assistant round. The last round was also a ranked exam, with far more candidates in its mark and rank list than there were posts.

If the next notice follows the last one, the parts that reward preparation are the Tamil eligibility paper, the Electrician and Wireman trade paper, and a timed pole climb.

Treat the last notification as a draft of the next one, not a promise. Pay is already fixed for the new posts, but qualifications, age limits, selection steps and application dates will only be known when the notification is out. If you do not yet hold an Electrician or Wireman trade certificate, the last round's rules made clear that a higher qualification alone did not qualify, so the trade certificate is the step to plan for. ITI graduates also figure in India's plan to train chip technicians for new fab jobs, which targets cleanroom and factory floor roles.

Lacey Kaelani, Metaintro's CEO, puts it this way: An approval is the starting gun, not the application window. The people who get these jobs will be the ones who prepared for the exam before the notice came out.
