Gujarat Says Honda Plans 4,000 Jobs in the State by the End of 2027
Gujarat expects Honda to create 4,000 jobs by the end of 2027, while Honda's own Vithalapur plan lists 1,800 roles. Here is what is new and how to prepare.

The Gujarat government says Honda plans to create 4,000 jobs in the state by the end of 2027, in a Times of India story that followed a state statement issued on Wednesday after an investment trip to Japan and South Korea. The number is not new. A week earlier, on October 21 in Tokyo, a Gujarat government release said Honda outlined an expansion plan aimed at creating 4000 new jobs for Gujarat youth by the end of 2027 or early 2028. Honda's own written plan for the state, a fourth production line at its fourth plant (Vithalapur, Ahmedabad district, Gujarat), carries a smaller job count. For Metaintro readers in western India, the useful part is a factory line with a start year, a product and a capacity on record.
What Did Gujarat Say About Honda This Week?
The statement came from the state government in Gandhinagar. It followed a trip by a delegation led by deputy chief minister Harsh Sanghavi to Japan and South Korea to attract investments ahead of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) 2027.
The trip was broad. In Japan, the delegation held more than 50 meetings and four high-level engagements. It also held one-to-one meetings with 34 leading companies such as Itochu, Nippon Steel, Suzuki Motor, Honda Motor and Tokyo Electron. In South Korea, it met 16 global companies, including LS Electric, Youngone Corporation, COSMAX, CS Wind, Orsted, Vestas and others. Five round-table conferences in South Korea brought together around 60 industry representatives from sectors including textiles, startups, biotechnology, and legal services.
Honda is the only company with a job number in the Times of India account of the statement. The statement was issued without mentioning the value of fresh investments likely to be made in the state, so there is no new rupee figure behind the jobs number.
State govt expects the engagements to strengthen Gujarat’s investment pipeline ahead of VGGS 2027, with potential opportunities spanning semiconductors, renewable energy, automobiles, textiles, biotechnology and food processing, the Gujarat government statement said, according to the Times of India report.
Is Gujarat's Honda Jobs Figure New, or a Restated Plan?
The same figure was given in Tokyo on October 21, in a Gujarat government release on a day when Sanghavi held individual meetings with 11 other major Japanese companies, including Sumitomo Chemical, Furukawa Electric, Honda and others. That release gave a looser date of the end of 2027 or early 2028. The end of 2027 alone appears in this week's Times of India report.
Honda's own job figures are different. The May 2025 plan for the new Vithalapur line comes with 1800 new jobs, and July coverage of the plan still put the Gujarat share at around 1,800 new jobs. In July 2026, the head of Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India gave a national total of more than 3,800 jobs, and that total covers two plants, Gujarat and Rajasthan, not Gujarat alone.
The state's accounts of the figure (October 21, this week) do not say whether it includes supplier jobs or how it relates to Honda's own numbers. The safe reading for a job seeker is that the jobs in Honda's release are the ones on record.
Both these expansions will also generate more than 3,800 new employment opportunities, HMSI President and CEO Tsutsumu Otani said, according to the Moneycontrol report on Honda's India plans.
What Is Honda Building at the Vithalapur Plant?
The Gujarat project is a fourth assembly line at an existing factory. Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI), Honda's motorcycle production and sales subsidiary in India, will build a fourth production line at its fourth plant in Vithalapur, Ahmedabad district. The plant sits at T Poddar Industrial Park, Vithalapur, Mandal, Ahmedabad.
The line will make one kind of product. Honda is building a fourth line capable of producing 650,000 units of 125cc class motorcycles each year, which will increase the total production capacity of the fourth plant to 2.61 million units, making it one of Honda's largest assembly plants for motorcycles in the world. The investment is approximately 9.2 billion rupees (about $96.5 million).
The plant has grown in steps. It started operation in February 2016 with an annual production capacity of 600,000 units, reached 1.2 million units with the start of its second line that June, and its third line started operation in January 2024, taking annual production capacity to 1.96 million units.
How Does Gujarat Fit Into Honda's Wider India Expansion?
Gujarat is one of two big build-outs. In March 2026, HMSI announced a new third production line at its Tapukara plant in Alwar District, Rajasthan, which will generate employment opportunities for over 2,000 people. That line is planned to begin operations in 2028, with an investment of approximately INR 15 billion (about $157 million). Since it began production in 2001, HMSI has produced over 70 million units.
The base keeps growing. When the Gujarat line was announced in May 2025, HMSI had four production plants in India with a total annual production capacity of 6.14 million units, and by March 2026 its four plants had a total annual capacity of 6.25 million units. With the two new lines and additional planned expansions at other plants, HMSI expects its overall annual production capacity to reach approximately 8 million units by FY2028. The four plants are in Manesar (Haryana), Tapukara (Rajasthan), Narasapura (Karnataka), and Vithalapur (Gujarat).
Exports are part of the reason for the build-out, with capacity designed not only to cater to domestic demand but also to support growing international markets. In July 2026, Honda was exporting motorcycles and scooters made in India to 65 countries, including developed markets such as Japan and Europe, and its export volumes grew from 0.36 million units in FY24 to 0.51 million units in FY25 and 0.62 million units in FY26.
Which Other Honda Jobs Sit Around the Factory Line?
The plant floor is only one part of the workforce. In its current careers brochure, HMSI counts 24 Zonal Offices to strategically manage Regional Sales and Service operations across PAN India, and its sales and service network has over 6,000 touchpoints. For bigger bikes, it has over 140 BigWing touchpoints that sell premium motorcycles. Sales and service work in that network is a separate route from the assembly line.
Work inside one Honda plant is already changing. At Tapukara, since 2023, HMSI has been introducing automation in machining and production efficiency technologies, and that plant's annual capacity stood at 1.3 million units in March 2026. Machine operation and maintenance skills are worth building alongside assembly.
Electric bikes are part of the picture too. The company's India chief described a balanced, multi-pathway approach encompassing ICE, electrification, and alternative fuel technologies, and under the Delhi EV policy only electric two-wheelers will be registered from April 2028. Basic electrical and battery skills are worth adding alongside mechanical ones.
When Would the New Gujarat Jobs Arrive?
Honda planned the Vithalapur line to begin operation in 2027, and by March 2026 the line is progressing as planned.
Honda has set a start year for the line without naming a hiring month. The state's investment summit runs on 10-12 January 2027 at Gandhinagar and will bring together Heads of States and Governments, Ministers, leaders from the corporate world and policy makers.
The summit is the focus of a large outreach push. Gujarat planned for delegations to visit 22 countries, while roadshows will be held in eight cities across India, with the event held at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar.
Which Other Companies Could Bring Jobs to Gujarat?
Honda and Suzuki were among the companies in the Tokyo talks, alongside Suzuki's suppliers. In Tokyo, Suzuki Motor's Gujarat production is set to double in the coming years, and Sanghavi met Suzuki Motor Corporation President Toshihiro Suzuki during the visit. At a separate roundtable with Suzuki suppliers, 24 new suppliers showed interest in setting up quickly near Suzuki's plant at Hansalpur.
Other plans touch chips and cables. Sumitomo Chemical decided to set up a new specialised chemicals unit for semiconductors in Bhavnagar. Furukawa Electric reached the final round of discussions on an investment of over ₹45 billion (about $472 million) in optical fibre cables for data centres, marking the first time this product will be manufactured outside Japan. Kyowa Leather agreed to set up a man-made PU leather plant in Gujarat, with land to be finalised within a month.
For auto workers, the supplier news matters as much as Honda's. The state says the Suzuki growth and supplier push will strengthen the state's automobile ecosystem and create more local jobs, without giving a job number. Gujarat also pitched textiles. Sanghavi invited Youngone Corporation, which employs around 100,000 people worldwide, to invest, and he highlighted the PM MITRA Textile Park, being developed across 1,142 acres in Navsari. Chip plants are another route for factory workers, and India's plan to train chip technicians as fab jobs open sets out that path.
Are These Firm Commitments or Early Talks?
They are a mix, and the state's own wording shows it. After returning to Ahmedabad on Sunday, Sanghavi said representatives from Japan and South Korea were expected to attend the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, and that talks covered the semiconductor, automobile, engineering and textile sectors.
The limit is plain. The investment discussions and expressions of interest should not be treated as confirmed investment commitments unless formal announcements are made, as Indian Masterminds put it. Words like final round, keen and decided carry different weight. Separately from the trip, Honda's Vithalapur line has a company release with a budget and a 2027 start.
For job seekers, that makes the Honda line the firmer part of the news. Its jobs sit on a line with a set budget and a planned start, while other outcomes from the trip, such as Furukawa Electric's cable plant, are still at the final round of discussions.
How Can Job Seekers Prepare for Honda's Gujarat Plant?
Start with the skills the plant uses. The new line will build motorcycles, so skills in assembly, machining, quality checks and two-wheeler maintenance line up with the work. Honda has run training with state ITIs in Gujarat before, and in 2019 it opened Skill Enhancement Centres in Gujarat in collaboration with Government Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in three cities of Rajkot, Gandhinagar and Sarkhej, and promised that on successful completion of training, Honda will provide recruitment opportunities to candidates at Honda manufacturing plants and dealerships.
Know what the employer offers. HMSI offers creche facilities for working parents, flexible working hours, state-of-the-art canteen facilities and air-conditioned buses under the HR policies and employee benefits in its careers brochure, which gives no pay figures.
Apply only through Honda's own channels or your ITI placement cell, and never pay a fee to anyone offering a place on the line.
What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?
Gujarat's figure is larger than the job count in Honda's own release for the line, and those Honda jobs are the ones you can plan around. They come with a real factory, a product and a start year.
Suzuki's growth plans and the supplier interest near Hansalpur mean more than one employer in the state's vehicle industry is looking at growth. Similar growth shows up at a car plant in Tamil Nadu, where a Stellantis car plant in Thiruvallur is set to more than double its staff. A worker who learns one assembly line can carry that skill to the next employer.
- Build the trade now. An ITI course in fitting, machining, welding or motor vehicle mechanics fits the work a motorcycle assembly line needs.
- Watch the January summit. The state is courting investors at VGGS in Gandhinagar, so look for Honda or Gujarat updates around it.
- Look at suppliers too. Watch for plant announcements from the Suzuki suppliers looking at Hansalpur.
