Tamil Nadu Lists 6,574 Tentative Government Job Vacancies, With Applications Due November 5
TNPSC lists 6,574 tentative Group 4 vacancies across 46 posts. Apply online by November 5, 2026 for the January 10, 2027 exam. See posts, rules and fees.

The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission has notified 6,574 vacancies under its Combined Civil Services Examination IV, the recruitment known as Group 4, and applications are open until November 5, 2026 up to 11:59 PM. The jobs span 46 posts, including Junior Assistant, VAO, Typist, Steno-Typist, Bill Collector and Forest Guard, and the written examination will be held on January 10, 2027. The count is tentative and liable for modification before counselling starts. For Metaintro readers in Tamil Nadu, the useful detail sits inside the official notification, covering which posts carry the most seats, what each one asks for, how the exam is scored and what it costs to apply. Here is that detail, taken mainly from the commission's own notification.
What Did TNPSC Announce on October 6?
The commission published Advertisement No. 747, Notification No. 11/2026, dated 06.10.2026, inviting applications only through online mode for direct recruitment to Group IV Services. The application window opened the same day, 06.10.2026, and the last date and time for submission is 05.11.2026 at 11.59 PM.
After the deadline, the Application Correction Window will open for three days from 09.11.2026 to 11.11.2026, and candidates can edit details in their online application during that period. No modification will be allowed once that window shuts, so the correction window from November 9 to 11 is the last chance to fix an error.
The exam itself is a single paper on 10.01.2027 from 09.30 A.M. to 12.30 P.M. The exam was rescheduled to 10 January 2027, and the three key dates of 06.10.2026, 05.11.2026 and 10.01.2027 are the ones to put in your calendar.
Which Posts Have the Most Vacancies?
The 46 posts add up to 6,574 vacancies, and the largest entries are listed below with each employing service.
- Junior Assistant (Non Security), Tamil Nadu Ministerial Service, 2,610 vacancies

- Junior Assistant (Accounts), Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation, 422 vacancies

The list also includes Tax Collector with 107 seats and Junior Assistant with 134 seats at the Greater Chennai Corporation, Revenue Assistant with 96 seats, Personal Clerk with 60 seats, Executive Officer (Grade IV) in the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments service with 46 seats and Forest Watcher with 40 seats. Forest Guard with Driving Licence is one of several posts with a single vacancy, alongside Telephone Operator and Senior Laboratory Assistant.
Two postings come with location conditions. Selected candidates for Sales Assistant should be ready to be posted in New Delhi, Kolkata and anywhere in Tamil Nadu, and those picked for Junior Assistant at the Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers Co-operative Societies should be ready to be posted anywhere in India. The department and unit-wise split of vacancies will be announced later.
The number of vacancies notified is tentative and is liable for modification, before the start of counselling, according to the official TNPSC notification.
What Do You Need to Qualify for Most Posts?
Village Administrative Officer, Junior Assistant in the Ministerial Service and Bill Collector must possess the Minimum General Educational Qualification, and the notification defines that as a pass in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination of Tamil Nadu. A 10th Standard pass from the Board of Open School, Tamil Nadu is treated as an SSLC pass. Qualifications must be held on the date of notification.
Junior Assistant at the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation must be a graduate from a University recognized by the University Grants Commission, and the Junior Assistant (Accounts) role at the power distribution company needs a B. Com. degree from a recognized University. The Sales Assistant post asks for any degree, preferably in Business Administration, Commerce, Corporate, Marketing or Economics.
Candidates should possess adequate knowledge in Tamil on the date of this Notification, which is met by passing SSLC or an equivalent examination, HSC or a degree with Tamil as one of the languages, studying the High School Course in Tamil medium, passing the SSLC examination or its equivalent in Tamil medium, or passing the commission's Second Class Language Test (Full Test) in Tamil. Candidates who cannot upload proof will be required to pass that test within two years from the date of appointment, failing which they shall be discharged from service.
The minimum age is 18 for most posts, 21 for Village Administrative Officer and the two forest posts and 25 for Executive Officer (Grade IV), counted as on 01.07.2026, and candidates outside the reserved categories should not have completed 30 for most posts. For most posts, reserved category candidates should not have completed 32 (BC, BCM, MBC/DC) or 35 (SC, SC(A), ST), and there is no maximum age limit for those who possess a General Educational Qualification higher than the minimum. Village Administrative Officer and the forest posts carry their own fixed limits for reserved categories, 40 for Village Administrative Officer, and 33 for BC, BCM and MBC/DC and 35 for SC, SC(A) and ST for the forest posts, and Executive Officer (Grade IV) is 37 for BC (OBCM) and MBC/DC and 40 for SC, SC(A) and ST. Where there is no maximum, the candidate should not have completed 60 years of age as on 01.07.2026 or at the time of selection or appointment to the post. The full table runs by post code, so check the row for the exact post you want.
Some posts carry further limits. Persons professing Hindu religion alone are eligible for the posts in the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, the Waqf Board Typist and Steno Typist posts are open to persons professing Muslim religion alone, and candidates outside the reserved categories who have put in five years or more of service since their first appointment to a government service are not eligible to apply. Differently abled persons with blindness and low vision are not eligible for the posts in the Judicial Department and the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority.
What Do Typist and Steno Typist Applicants Need on Top?
The Ministerial and Judicial Typist posts ask for the Minimum General Educational Qualification plus a pass in the Government Technical Examination in Typewriting by Higher or Senior Grade in Tamil and English, or Higher or Senior Grade in one language with Lower or Junior Grade in the other, plus a Certificate Course in Computer on Office Automation conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. Municipal Council and Greater Chennai Corporation typists need Senior Grade typewriting in both Tamil and English.
For several typist posts, including the Ministerial, Judicial and Small Industries ones, candidates without the office automation certificate may also apply, and if selected, they should acquire such qualification within the period of their probation or within two years from the date of appointment. Whatever is claimed must already be held, since candidates must be in possession of the Typewriting, Shorthand or Computer on Office Automation qualifications claimed, on or before the date of notification. If the certificate was issued after that date, proof that the result was published on or before the date of notification must be uploaded.
Steno Typist (Grade III) candidates must have passed the Government Technical Examination both in Typewriting and in Shorthand at the grades set for each post. Among Typist candidates with equal marks, candidates possessing higher qualification in Typewriting will be placed above the candidates possessing lower qualification.
Grades also set the order of selection. For the Ministerial, Judicial, Legislative Assembly, Secretariat and ELCOT typist posts, and for most Steno Typist posts, candidates with Higher or Senior Grade in both Tamil and English will be selected first, and those with a Lower or Junior Grade in one language are selected only if such candidates are not available.
How Is the Group 4 Exam Scored?
The single paper has 200 questions for 300 marks over 3 hours, taken in OMR objective format, split as follows on the official scheme of examination.
- Part A, Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test, SSLC standard, 100 questions, 150 marks
- Part B, General Studies, 75 questions
- Part C, Aptitude and Mental Ability, 25 questions
The Tamil section is a gate as well as a score. Parts B and C will be evaluated only if the candidate secures minimum qualifying marks of 40% (i.e., 60 Marks) in Part A, and the total from all three parts sets the rank. The minimum qualifying mark for the whole paper is 90 for all communities. Part A questions are set in Tamil only, while Parts B and C will be set both in Tamil and English.
Differently abled candidates who studied only English at board or university level can avail exemption from writing the Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test and opt for General English (SSLC Standard), with the same minimum qualifying marks of 40% (i.e., 60 marks). Ranking runs on total marks secured by the candidates in the written examination, and the exam is conducted as single stage Written Examination.
All the recruitments by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission are purely merit-based, according to the commission's Group 4 notification.
How Do You Apply, and What Does It Cost?
Candidates are required to apply online by using www.tnpscexams.in, registering first on the One Time Registration (OTR) platform, and those already registered can go straight to the application. Registration costs Rs.150 and is valid for five years from the date of registration.
Two practical points come from the commission's general rules. Linking Aadhaar number with One Time Registration (OTR) is mandatory for applicants, and the registration is different from the application for the examination, so an OTR alone does not count as applying.
The exam fee is separate. An examination fee of Rs.100 should be paid at the time of submitting the online application, unless exemption of fee is claimed, and payment is online through Net Banking, Credit card, Debit card or UPI. Demand drafts and postal orders will not be accepted.
Under the commission's Instructions to Applicants, revised with effect from 22.03.2022, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, persons with benchmark disability and destitute widows get full fee exemption, and Most Backward Classes and Backward Classes get three free chances. Ex-servicemen get two free chances under this notification.
What Does a Group 4 Job Pay?
The notification gives a level of pay for each post rather than a rupee figure for most of them. Village Administrative Officer is placed at Level 8, and the Ministerial Steno Typist post at Level 10, while Forest Watcher sits at Level 3 and Forest Guard with Driving Licence at Level 5.
For a few posts outside the main services, the scale is printed in full. The power distribution Junior Assistant (Accounts) post is Level 3 at ₹19,500 to ₹62,000, the Urban Habitat Development Board Bill Collector is Level 3 at ₹16,600 to ₹52,400, and the Handloom Weavers Junior Assistant is ₹17,000 to ₹54,060 plus EPF. Several corporation posts are marked EPF, the Employees Provident Fund, in the pay column.
Adda247 lists Level 8 at ₹19,500 to ₹71,900 and Steno-Typist Level 10 at ₹20,600 to ₹75,900, and those ranges are not printed in the notification, so treat them as a guide.
How Are Candidates Picked After the Exam?
The commission will first hold onscreen certificate verification, admitting candidates in a 1:3 or 1:2 ratio for general and reserved categories for Village Administrative Officer, Junior Assistant, Typist and Steno Typist posts. Physical certificate verification and counselling follow, with candidates allowed to participate in the counselling based on rank.
Forest Guard and Forest Watcher candidates face an Endurance Test of a walk over 25 km and 16 km to be completed in four hours by male and female or third gender candidates respectively, and the Physical Standards Test and Endurance Test will be conducted only at Chennai. The minimum height is 163 cm for men and 150 cm for women and third gender candidates, with lower limits of 152 cm and 145 cm for Scheduled Tribes, and the chest must measure 79 cm for men and 74 cm for women and third gender candidates, with 5 cm expansion. Only candidates who possess these minimum physical standards are eligible to apply for the two forest posts.
Forest Guard with Driving Licence also needs a pass in Higher Secondary with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Zoology or Botany as one of the subjects, a valid driving licence, a certificate from a reputed firm or company of not less than three years of experience driving Light or Heavy Motor Vehicles after getting the licence, basic knowledge of the general mechanism of automobiles, and a first aid certificate from a recognized organization in Tamil Nadu. The post also requires 6/6 distance vision and 0.5 (Snellen) near vision in each eye without glasses, with a full field of vision, and colour blindness, squint or any Lasik or laser eye surgery is a disqualification. In the application, candidates choose between All the Posts and posts other than the forest roles, so pick the forest option only if you meet those standards.
Can the Number of Vacancies Change?
Yes. The figure is tentative and liable for modification, and the commission reserves the right to include additional posts with different nomenclature and having similar eligibility conditions.
An earlier round, the 2024 one, shows how much a count can move. In that cycle, the notification initially announced 6,244 vacancies, and the number was later increased to 8,932, with results declared on 28 Oct 2024 for an exam held in June 2024. There is no promise of a repeat, but it is a reason not to judge your chances only on the current seat count.
Coaching centres in Chennai are expected to see a fresh rush, with candidates getting just a little over three months to prepare before the exam, and graduates and postgraduates also compete for the vacancies even though Class 10 is the basic bar for most posts.
What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?
The largest blocks of seats are Junior Assistant and Typist roles. Many Junior Assistant posts are open to SSLC holders, including the biggest entry of 2,610 Junior Assistant (Non Security) posts, while Typist and Steno Typist posts are for typists and stenographers who already hold government typing and shorthand certificates. Graduates also compete for the vacancies, and ranking runs on written exam marks, so the paper is where most of the work goes. Hiring by written exam and certificates is a different route from the U.S. federal push away from degree requirements described in Skills Over Degrees: Revolutionizing Government Job Recruitment. If you are still weighing which public-sector path fits your skills, Types of Civil Service Jobs and How to Choose the Right Government Career Path is a starting point, and the Group 4 notification is the document to read line by line before you apply.
Our take is that the Tamil section, Part A, deserves the most attention. It carries 150 of the 300 marks and decides whether the rest of your answer sheet is even read, so scoring below 60 in Part A ends the attempt regardless of General Studies. The overall pass mark of 90 still applies on top. Here is a practical order of work.
- Register early. Finish the One Time Registration with Aadhaar linked well before the 11.59 PM deadline on 05.11.2026.
- Check your documents now. Typing and shorthand qualifications you claim must be held on or before the date of notification, and if a certificate was issued later, proof that the result was published on or before that date must be uploaded. For several typist and steno posts, the office automation certificate can be earned during probation or within two years of appointment.
- Gather scans first. Keep the SSLC mark sheet, any typewriting, shorthand and office automation certificates, the community certificate and age-concession proof where they apply, a recent photograph and a scanned signature ready before applying.
- Pick posts carefully. Read the post code rows for qualification and age, and only tick the forest option if you meet the height, chest and endurance standards.
- Use the correction window. It runs from 09.11.2026 to 11.11.2026, and nothing can be changed after it closes.
- Plan study around Part A. The 60 mark floor in the Tamil test comes first, then General Studies and Aptitude.
- Ignore touts. The commission cautions candidates against touts and agents who may cheat by making false promises of securing jobs.
