Kenyan Nurses, Clinical Officers and Plumbers Have Until October 5 to Apply for 202 Elgeyo Marakwet County Posts
Elgeyo Marakwet County has 202 posts open across 66 vacancies, from an orthopedic surgeon to 20 plumbing artisans. Licences you need and how to apply by Oct 5.

Elgeyo Marakwet County in Kenya is recruiting for 202 positions across 66 active vacancies, with most applications due by 5 October 2026. The openings run from one orthopedic surgeon and five medical officers to enrolled nurses, clinical officer anaesthetists, youth polytechnic instructors and 20 plumbing artisans. For most applicants, what decides the result is not the advert but the licence or trade certificate the advert asks for, and some of those take weeks to obtain. At Metaintro we read county adverts against the regulators' own licensing pages, because that is where a strong candidate usually wins or loses the application. This piece goes post by post, then through the paperwork.
What Exactly Has the County Public Service Board Advertised?
The advert comes from the County Public Service Board, which posted it on its recruitment portal as external advertisements dated 15 September 2026. The board's portal counts 66 active vacancies and 202 positions, with the next closing date on 5 October.
You may see a smaller number elsewhere. The Uasin Gishu News story puts it at more than 180 vacancies, which is a floor rather than a different count. The portal's own figure is the one to plan around.
The reason given for the hiring matters. The posts have fallen vacant due to natural attrition, so these are replacement jobs in existing services rather than a new programme that could be cut next year.
The spread is wide. The full vacancy list runs across roads and public works, agriculture and livestock, education and technical training, health, lands and housing, finance, ICT, water and environment, and sports and social services. It includes veterinary officers, quantity surveyor assistants, software developers, fire officers, a legal officer and a game warden.
The biggest single allocations sit at the skilled trade and community level. There are 20 Artisan III plumbing posts in the water department, and the same number of Youth Development Officer II posts in sports and social services.
Which Health Workers Is Elgeyo Marakwet Hiring?
Health is where the most senior and most specialised posts are, and each one carries a licence condition.
At the top is a single orthopedic surgeon at job group CPSB 04, who will chair the orthopedic unit and act as its contact person in clinical referral services, research and training. This is a unit lead, not a junior specialist post. The duties include recruitment and discipline in the unit and advising the hospital executive.
Next come five medical officers at CPSB 07. The role covers medical and surgical procedures, emergency and disaster response, and teaching medical, nursing and clinical officer students, which is useful experience for any doctor planning a specialist route later.
The four clinical officer posts are narrower than the title suggests. Each Registered Clinical Officer I post requires a higher diploma in clinical medicine and surgery in anaesthesia, and the duties are pre-operative screening, intra-operative management and post-operative follow up of theatre patients. A general clinical officer without the anaesthesia higher diploma does not meet the bar.
Nursing has the largest health allocation. The county wants 11 Enrolled Nurse III staff at CPSB 12, working across immunisation, antenatal care, delivery, school health and home visits. There are also two Registered Nurse III posts at CPSB 11, and two radiographers sit alongside public health and nutrition roles.
The four clinical officer posts are for anaesthesia specialists, and the advert asks for a higher diploma in anaesthesia on top of the basic clinical medicine diploma.
What Licences Do Doctors, Nurses and Clinical Officers Need Before Applying?
Every clinical post names a regulator, and a lapsed or missing licence is the quickest way to be screened out.
Doctors need registration with the medical regulator. The medical officer post asks for an MBChB, a completed one year internship and a registration licence from the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board. Licensing today sits with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council, which issues general practice, registrar, senior registrar and specialist practice licences, all applied for online through its services portal.
The surgeon post adds two more layers. It requires a Masters in Medicine in orthopedic surgery and a specialized recognition certificate from the Kenya Orthopedic Association, on top of the MBChB and registration.
Nurses need both a certificate and a current licence. The enrolled nurse post asks for an enrolment certificate and a valid practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya. The registered nurse post asks for a registration certificate and the same live licence.
Timing works in favour of new graduates. Graduates who pass the national licensure exam apply online, and once registration and licensing is completed the Nursing Council of Kenya issues a practice license within 72 hours and a registration certificate within 4 weeks. The practice licence arrives first, so that is the document to chase if you are newly qualified.
Clinical officers follow a longer path. Every clinical officer practising in Kenya must be registered and licensed by the Clinical Officers Council under the 2017 Act, after a council exam and a one year internship. The registration and licence fee is Kshs. 11,500 for both diploma and degree holders, and documents are due within 3 months after internship.
What Do Youth Polytechnic Instructors Need to Show?
The Education and Technical Training department is hiring instructors to teach trades, and this is where the solar, plumbing and motor vehicle jobs actually sit.
The largest instructor allocations are in clothing technology with 10 posts, building and construction with 9, and hairdressing and beauty therapy with 9. Smaller allocations cover leatherwork, carpentry and joinery, agribusiness, motor vehicle technology, food processing, and refrigeration and air conditioning.
The solar post is a teaching job, not an installation job. The solar PV system installation instructor needs a diploma in electronics or electrical engineering plus a computer certificate, and the duties are lesson plans, practical instruction, trainee assessment and assessing trainees on industrial attachment. An electrician with a diploma and field experience fits that profile well.
Plumbing instructors face the steepest bar. The four plumbing and pipe fitting instructor posts require a diploma in plumbing, a Government Master Craftsman or Trade Test 1 certificate, and a Training of Trainers course lasting not less than six weeks.
National trainer rules sit behind this. Section 23 of the TVET Act requires that all TVET trainers are registered and licensed by the TVET Authority, which lists pedagogy training such as the Kenya School of TVET instructor diploma among the documents it wants. A first time trainer licence costs KES 1,000.00 and is valid for three years. The county advert does not list this licence as a condition, so treat it as a strength to mention rather than a gate.

Who Can Apply for the Plumbing Artisan Posts?
This is the most open door in the advert, and also the easiest one to miss for want of a single certificate.
Each of the 20 Artisan III plumbing posts at CPSB 14 needs one qualification, a Government Trade Test Certificate Grade III in plumbing. The work is installing, repairing and maintaining pipes, valves, fittings and drainage, diagnosing faults and responding to plumbing emergencies.
The trade test is run by the National Industrial Training Authority, which tests candidates three times a year. April covers Grades I, II and III, August covers Grades II and I, and December is for Grade III candidates.
That calendar matters. Anyone without the Grade III certificate cannot sit it before the 5 October deadline, because the next Grade III sitting is in December. A plumber who works informally and misses this round should book the next test now, so the certificate is in hand for the next county or water company advert.
A plumber with a Grade III trade test certificate already meets the full requirement for 20 county artisan posts, and nothing else is listed.
The road and fleet trade posts follow the same logic. The advert also lists motor vehicle mechanic, plant mechanic and plant operator posts under Roads, Public Works and Transport, so read each one for the trade certificate and years of experience it asks for.
What Do These Jobs Pay, and How Long Do the Contracts Last?
The honest answer on pay is that the advert does not print a shilling figure. Each post carries a county job group, from CPSB 04 for the surgeon to CPSB 14 for plumbing artisans, and the instructor posts are listed on a consolidated salary rather than a graded scale.
Ask about the scale at interview, not before. A job group tells you where the post sits in the county structure, and the exact pay, allowances and increments should be confirmed in writing before you sign.
Contract length is clearer. All advertised positions are on three year contract terms, except the Chief Officer for Sports, Tourism and Social Services, whose tenure is tied to the term of the Governor.
A three year contract is not a permanent pensionable post. For a newly licensed nurse or an artisan it is still a strong move, because it gives three years of documented public sector experience to put on the next application. If you are comparing it with private work, our breakdown of the types of civil service jobs explains how public career paths usually progress.
How Does the Online Application Work, and What Gets You Rejected?
The process is fully digital, and the portal describes it as 100% online application. You create an account and upload documents once, complete a profile of education, experience and qualifications, then apply and track your status from shortlisting to final outcome.
Check each post's own deadline. Most close on 5 Oct 2026, but the building inspector post in Roads, Public Works and Transport runs to 15 Oct 2026 and the nutrition and dietetics technologist post to 10 Oct 2026.
Four rules decide who gets through. Only online applications will be accepted, only complete applications will be considered and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, and submitting fake or forged papers is a criminal offence. Successful candidates must also meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.
The board lists its contact line as +254 790 570 990 and its offices in Iten town along the Iten to Kabarnet road. Save that number, so a shortlisting call is not mistaken for spam.
What This Means for Kenyan Job Seekers, and What Should You Do This Week?
This advert rewards people who already hold the right paper. The strongest candidates are licensed nurses, anaesthesia trained clinical officers and plumbers with a Grade III trade test, because they can apply today with nothing left to obtain.
If you are a nurse, log into the Nursing Council portal and confirm your licence is current before you open the county application. A recent graduate who has passed the licensure exam can still get a licence within days, which is enough time if you move this week.
If you are a clinical officer, be honest about the anaesthesia requirement. The four posts are theatre roles, and a general diploma without the anaesthesia higher diploma will not be shortlisted however strong the rest of the file is.
If you are a doctor, confirm your annual practice licence is renewed on the council's portal, and if you are a specialist, check that your specialist recognition is in the file. The surgeon post is a unit leadership job, so put your theatre numbers, teaching and referral experience front and centre.
If you are a tradesperson who wants to teach, read each instructor post line by line. Some want only a diploma, while plumbing wants a master craftsman level test and a six week trainer course. That gap decides who is eligible.
If you work informally in a trade, use this round as a warning rather than a loss. Book the next trade test, keep evidence of your work, and be ready for the next public advert. We have seen before, in the loss of online writing jobs in Nairobi, how quickly informal work can dry up, and a certified trade is harder to take away.
Finally, apply early. Scanning and uploading certificates takes longer than most people expect, and incomplete applications are not considered, so aim to finish a week before the closing date.
