McDonald's Is Filling 150+ Algarve Jobs From Crew to Manager, Open Until Year End
McDonald's Portugal is hiring 150+ people in six Algarve towns until year end. What the roles involve, what students are owed by law, and how to apply.

McDonald's Portugal is recruiting more than 150 people for its Algarve restaurants, with vacancies open until the end of the year across six municipalities. For anyone in the region who works the summer and dreads the winter, that is the useful part of the story. These are jobs being filled as the tourist season winds down, not as it starts. At Metaintro we read hiring drives like this one against the employer's own postings, the national wage floor and the labour code, because the wire copy tells you how many jobs exist but not what you are entitled to once you take one. Here is what the roles involve, what they have to pay, and what a student can ask for.
Where Are the Algarve Jobs, and Which Roles Are Open?
The vacancies sit in Lagos, Portimão, Faro, Loulé, Vila Real de Santo António and Albufeira in one recruitment drive. The roles run from entry level restaurant teams through to management and leadership positions.
The recruitment is timed to the calendar, not the beach. The campaign behind it, titled "Se a vida não é só trabalho, escolhe o Mac", is aimed at younger workers and sells flexibility, meaning a job that can sit alongside studies or other personal projects. The same release frames the start of the new academic year as the moment for students entering university who need an income to cover the costs of that new stage.
The company behind the ads is large by Portuguese standards. It counts more than 12,000 employees and has been in Portugal for over 30 years, while the regional release puts the network at 222 restaurants nationally. That same careers page states that 90% of its restaurants are run by local franchisees, which matters for you in a practical way. The business that signs your contract, sets your rota and pays your salary is usually a local operator trading under the brand.
What Does a Crew Job at McDonald's Portugal Actually Ask For?
Less than most job seekers assume. The entry level role is advertised as Operador de Restauração, and a live posting for the restaurant at Guia AlgarveShopping asks only that you have completed 12th grade or are a high school or university student, like working in a team, adapt easily and want to learn.
The duties are written plainly on the same posting. You serve customers, prepare and assemble products, keep the space organised and clean, and receive and restock deliveries. In return the ad lists flexible schedules, initial and ongoing training, the scholarship programme and opportunities to grow inside the company. An identical crew ad was live for the Aqua Portimão restaurant when we checked the board this week.
There is a second front of house role worth knowing about. The Assistente de Sala posting at the Guia restaurant prefers a college degree and customer service experience, and the job includes coordinating the front of house team and training and motivating colleagues in partnership with management. That is a role with supervisory content from day one, which reads well on a CV even if you later leave the sector.
The business that signs your contract and sets your rota is usually a local franchisee, so ask who your employer actually is before you sign.
What Do the Management Roles Involve?
These are the jobs that change the calculation for experienced candidates. A restaurant manager in this drive leads a team of about 50 people and handles human resources, purchasing, financial management, quality and food safety.
Read that list as a skills inventory rather than a job description. Hiring, stock control and cost management across a team that size are exactly what hotel, retail and logistics employers look for in a supervisor, and in a tourism region those employers are everywhere. The management scope listed in the Portugal Resident report also includes the day to day running of restaurant teams.
The company's careers site describes the manager as someone who leads and develops people to deliver quality and safety while looking after the wellbeing of staff and customers. It also lists supporting roles that many applicants never consider, including trainer, administrative assistant, marketing assistant and public relations. The administrative assistant, for example, handles personnel procedures in the restaurant and helps the management team onboard new staff, which is a real entry route into HR work.
How Does the UP Scholarship Actually Work?
This is the most concrete benefit in the package, and it has a published track record. The company's own press office confirms that the UP national scholarship programme opened its sixth edition at the start of the 2025/2026 academic year, and that more than 1,300 scholarships have been awarded since its launch in 2020.
The money is fixed. Each scholarship is worth 1,000 euros per academic year to each recipient, and the brand and its franchisees award more than 250 of them a year nationally. The careers site describes the same benefit as support of up to €1000/year for your education.
The outcomes are the part that makes it credible. About 300 employees have finished a degree or master's with the scholarship's help, and nursing, psychology, law, human resources management, management and engineering are the fields most often chosen. The same release describes each restaurant trying to coordinate rotas around staff members' academic commitments.
Two cautions before you count on the money. The award is competitive, since 1,300 awards over six editions is a small share of a workforce of more than 12,000 employees. And the timing of applications is not on the recruitment pages we checked, so ask at interview when the next edition opens and whether new starters are eligible for it.
What Is the Legal Pay Floor in Portugal This Year?
McDonald's Portugal does not print a wage on the Algarve postings we read, so the law sets your starting reference point. Decreto-Lei n.º 139/2025, published on 29 December, fixed the guaranteed minimum monthly wage at €920 with effect from 1 January 2026.
That figure comes from the government's labour relations directorate, DGERT, which places the rise inside the 2025 to 2028 social partners' agreement on incomes. For you the practical point is simple. Any full time contract you are offered in the Algarve this autumn cannot start below that monthly figure, and a part time contract should show clearly how many weekly hours your pay is based on.
Ask for three things in writing before you accept. The gross monthly pay, the contracted weekly hours, and whether the schedule is fixed or variable. The careers site promises fixed part-time schedules that can fit around studies, but it also adds that this depends on the restaurant's needs, and those needs look very different in a coastal town in January than in August.
What Rights Do Student Workers Have Under Portuguese Law?
This is the section most job ads leave out, and it is the one that protects your grades. Portugal's labour code gives anyone attending school, a degree, a postgraduate course or a vocational course of six months or more the status of trabalhador-estudante, under article 89. The guide from the union confederation CGTP-IN sets the articles out in plain language.
Your schedule should, whenever possible, be adjusted so you can attend classes and travel to them. If that cannot be done, you are entitled to paid time off for classes, counted as time worked, on a sliding scale set by your contracted hours.
- Three hours a week if you work between 20 and 30 hours a week
- Four hours a week for contracts of 30 to under 34 hours
- Five hours a week for 34 to under 38 hours
- Six hours a week for 38 hours or more
Exams are covered separately under article 91. You can be absent on the day of the exam and the day before, including weekends and holidays, up to four days per subject in each academic year. Absences for the travel needed to sit exams are also justified, with up to 10 of them paid each academic year regardless of how many subjects you take.
There is more. You are not obliged to work overtime except in cases of force majeure, and you can take up to 15 days of holiday in separate blocks to suit your studies, as long as the business can cope. You also have the right to 10 working days of unpaid leave each calendar year.
A student worker can be absent on the day of an exam and the day before, up to four days per subject in each academic year.
How Do You Claim Student Worker Status?
The rights are not automatic. Under article 94 you have to prove you are a student to your employer, usually with a proof of enrolment and your class timetable, and you must choose the class timetable that fits best with your working hours or you lose the benefits.
Keeping the status also takes effort. At the end of each year you have to show your employer that you passed, which the law defines as moving up a year or passing at least half of the subjects you are enrolled in. The unpaid leave rules come with notice periods too, of 48 hours for a single day, 8 days for two to five days, and 15 days for anything longer.
Put the paperwork in during your first week, not the week before exams. A restaurant manager building a rota around dozens of part time staff will plan around the students who told them early.
Why Is McDonald's Hiring in the Algarve Now, After the Summer?
Because winter is when the region's labour market empties out. In the first quarter of this year the Algarve's unemployment rate was 6.7%, above the national rate of 6.1%, and one of only three regions above the average. The same Statistics Portugal release shows the Algarve at 5.3% in the fourth quarter of 2025 and 8.1% a year earlier.
That swing is the seasonal pattern in a single table. A labour market study published in June by the Randstad Research team found registered unemployment in the region rising by around 60% in the winter months before falling sharply again each spring. Young people are exposed to that cycle nationally too, with youth unemployment for 16 to 24 year olds at 19.1% in the first quarter.
Against that background, a year round employer recruiting into the autumn is doing something different from the hotels and beach bars that shed staff in October. It does not make a fast food job a career by default. It does mean that in the Algarve, where many contracts end with the season, a role with a continuous schedule has real value. For a UK comparison, see how John Lewis is filling its Christmas seasonal jobs this month.
How Do You Apply, and What Happens After You Do?
Applications go through the McDonald's Portugal website, where you select your preferred region and the role you want. The careers portal at careers.mcdonalds.pt runs the process through a virtual recruiting assistant called Olivia, which walks you through the application and schedules your interview.
The published sequence has four steps. You apply with Olivia, meet the team for an interview, receive a job offer, and sign and join the team. Search by town rather than by region, since the live ads we found were tied to individual restaurants such as AlgarveShopping in Guia and Aqua Portimão.
Use the interview to settle the questions the ad does not answer. Ask for the gross monthly pay, the weekly hours on the contract, whether the rota is fixed, and how the restaurant handles student worker requests. If you are aiming at management, ask how many managers in that franchise group started as crew. The ladder at a rival chain is spelled out step by step in our look at how Chipotle is adding an Apprentice to every restaurant, and it is a useful benchmark for what a promotion path should look like on paper.
What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?
For a student in Faro or Portimão, this is one of the better part time options going into winter, but only if you use the law as well as the job ad. The employer offers flexibility subject to restaurant needs. The labour code offers something firmer, which is paid time off for classes and exams once you have registered your status. Do not rely on the first when you are entitled to the second.
For someone with supervisory experience from a hotel or restaurant season, the management roles are the more interesting half of this drive. Running a team of around fifty people with responsibility for purchasing, finance and food safety is experience that holds its value, and you gain it in the months when most of the region's tourism employers are cutting back.
For everyone else, treat this as a pay floor and a paperwork check. Know the legal monthly minimum before the interview, ask who your actual employer is, and get your hours in writing. If the answers are clear, a year round job in a seasonal region is worth more than its hourly rate suggests. If they are vague, keep looking, because other employers are hiring in the same towns.
