Up to 650 Rockford Workers Could Staff PCI Pharma's New Auto-Injector and Packaging Plants
PCI Pharma's three new Rockford plants could employ up to 650 people in packaging, auto-injector assembly and clinical supply. See roles, pay and how to apply.

Three new PCI Pharma Services plants on Rockford's south side are expected to add about 650 jobs combined, and the company opened them on Tuesday, September 22. The honest reading of that figure is a ceiling on headcount across the three buildings, not a count of fresh vacancies today, because part of the workforce is already in place and growth at the two larger plants depends on customer demand. The roles named for the new plants run from line operators and project managers to engineering and quality specialists. At Metaintro we check a headline jobs number against the employer's own postings, so this piece sets out which roles exist, what they pay, what they ask for and where to apply.
What Exactly Did PCI Pharma Open in Rockford?
The company opened three buildings near Linden and Alpine roads. Two are new plants of 320,000 and 200,000 square feet at 4840 and 4880 Linden Road. The third is a 155,000 square foot packaging and labeling facility off Linden and Alpine roads.
The buildings do different jobs. The two Linden Road plants will focus on commercial packaging for complex prescriptions, meaning products already on the market, from over-the-counter items to prescriptions filled at pharmacies. The Alpine Road site is a hub for clinical trials, storage and global distribution, where product is packaged for drugs still moving through the approval process.
Work at this crossroads has been visible for a while. In May 2025 the city administrator said PCI was getting ready to add approximately 300,000 square feet as phase one on the west side of Alpine Road, with construction expected to start that summer. That construction was set for the corner of Linden Road and Alpine Road, the same crossroads where this week's buildings opened.
PCI is not a drug brand. It describes itself as a contract development and manufacturing organization, which means pharmaceutical companies hire it to fill, assemble, package and ship their medicines. That matters to a job seeker, because the work is likely to depend on how many client products come through the doors rather than on any single drug.
How Many of the 650 Jobs Are Actually Open?
Fewer than the headline suggests, at least for now. At the two Linden Road plants, 150 people are employed right now, and the expectation is to grow up to 500 as demand picks up. The packaging and labeling facility will employ approximately 150.
So the jobs figure is a ceiling that includes people already hired, and growth at the two Linden Road plants is tied to demand. That means the hiring will likely come in waves rather than all at once.
The company's total headcount in the city is reported differently depending on who you ask. One local report puts it at approximately 3,000 employees across eight local facilities, while one television station, reporting on the Rockford expansion, put the current workforce at more than 2,200 workers, rising to more than 2,600 once the new plants open. Either way, PCI is one of the city's largest employers, and its Rockford campuses are now the largest in its global network.
The trend line is the more useful number. PCI has more than doubled its local employment in Rockford since 2019. An employer that has grown that fast is likely to keep posting roles, including replacements as people move up.
The two Linden Road plants employ 150 people now and could grow up to 500 as demand picks up, so the hiring is likely to arrive in waves.
What Will Workers in the New Plants Actually Make?
Not the medicine itself. The Rockford operation handles the final assembly and packaging of self-injection devices such as autoinjectors, prefilled syringes and injector pens. Workers at the new site will assemble and package auto-injectors used to give therapies for autoimmune disease, diabetes and weight loss.
The company's global vice president of technical sales said that as people have experienced more and more GLP-1s, they are having more experience of potentially self-dosing, which he called revolutionary for weight loss and diabetes patients and in many other patient states. None of the reports we read names which client drugs run through the Rockford lines, so treat any brand name you see elsewhere as a guess.
The scale is large. Officials say the new facilities will package hundreds of millions of doses each year, and the expansion adds advanced cold storage. PCI's own April announcement said it plans a third autoinjector line in 2027, bringing its US autoinjector and device assembly capacity to more than 250 million units per year. That release named Rockford and Philadelphia as the campuses getting the autoinjector buildouts.
The investment sits inside a bigger program. PCI describes a commitment exceeding $1 billion across its US and European operations, announced as drugmakers increasingly prioritize US supply chain resilience. For workers, that framing matters more than the dollar figure, because onshoring demand is a reason to expect these lines to stay busy.
Which Roles Is PCI Hiring For in Rockford?
The roles named for the new plants cover line operators and project managers, as well as technical engineering and quality assurance roles tied to drug-device combination products.
The live postings on the PCI careers portal give a fuller picture. A Rockford search there this week listed a warehouse supervisor and a weekend warehouse person, a commercial production supervisor, an IC&V technician and an IC&V lead, validation analysts, a clinical associate project manager, a maintenance supervisor, a facilities reliability technician, a project engineer and an automation engineer. A separate first shift maintenance mechanic posting is also open.
When we searched the Rockford listings this week, we did not find one titled line operator. That does not mean the roles are not coming. It suggests the frontline production hiring may run through a different channel or open later as lines ramp up. The company's chief operating officer said people often start as a temporary employee and work their way up, so a temporary start is a realistic way in.
Several postings name the site. The weekend warehouse role and the production supervisor role list a site on Assembly Drive in Rockford as the location, and the portal also carries a maintenance supervisor role for Linden Road, one of the new plant sites.
What Does PCI Pay in Rockford, According to Its Own Postings?
This is where the postings add something the news coverage did not. PCI's current Rockford ads list their pay, as follows.
- Warehouse Person 1, weekend shift. The hiring rate is $19.52 an hour, made up of a $16.00 base plus a 22% shift premium, on a 7am to 7pm weekend schedule.
- Validation Analyst 1. The posting lists a hiring rate of $19.96 to $22.46.
- IC&V Technician 1, second shift. The range is $24.58 to $27.65 hourly.
- Maintenance Mechanic 2, first shift. The range is $24.58 to $29.19 an hour.
- Supervisor, Commercial Production. The listed hiring rate is $62,960.00 to $70,830.00, a range listed for Illinois residents.
Each of these ads adds eligibility for an annual performance bonus. Full-time staff also get a benefits package that includes paid time off, health insurance coverage with dental and vision, a flexible spending account and a 401(k).
Read the warehouse figure carefully. Part of the weekend rate is a shift premium on top of the base, so a weekday version of the same job may pay less. Ask what the premium is on each shift before you accept.
PCI's weekend warehouse role pays $19.52 an hour, and part of that is a weekend shift premium on top of the base, so compare shifts before you choose.
What Do You Need to Get Hired?
The entry roles ask for basic skills, and the technical ones ask for more.
The weekend warehouse job asks applicants to meet a skills test, have basic math and computer skills and be able to read simple instructions. New hires complete orientation, cGMP and safety training and go through PCI's own forklift licensing program, and the posting does not ask for a forklift certificate up front.
The validation analyst job asks for a High School Diploma or GED and/or one to three years of related experience or training. Hires must pass an internal course the company calls a Documentation Boot Camp. That is a genuine entry route into quality work for someone who is careful with paperwork.
The technical roles set a higher bar. The IC&V technician posting asks for an Associate's Degree in a related field and/or one to three years of experience, and its duties cover PLCs, servo systems, vision systems, lasers and printers. The maintenance mechanic role wants two to three years of maintenance experience, preferably in manufacturing, or a two-year technical school, and it lists packaging experience as a plus.
Be ready for extra hours. The validation analyst posting, like the others we read, says the job may require overtime and/or weekend work, and it lists attendance as an essential function of the role.
What Is cGMP, and Why Does Every Posting Mention It?
Every PCI posting we read asks staff to follow cGMP policies. The term stands for the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations enforced by the US Food and Drug Administration. They require drug makers to control their operations so each product has the right identity, strength, quality and purity.
In practice, the FDA says this covers strong quality systems, robust operating procedures and detecting and investigating product quality deviations. For a line worker, that is likely to mean following written procedures and keeping careful records.
In our view, that habit is what sets a pharma packaging job apart from much general warehouse or assembly work. If you have worked in food production, medical devices, aerospace or any audited environment, say so on your application, because it shows you already work to documented procedures.
Why Did PCI Choose Rockford Over Other Cities?
The company says it ran a nationwide search and picked Rockford for its public-private partnership, local leaders and the talent and work ethic of the community. Construction was led by a local Rockford builder and the plants were designed by a local architecture firm.
The regional labor data backs up the workforce argument. The Greater Rockford Chamber of Commerce counts approximately 45,459 workers in manufacturing, about 19% of regional employment. Its list of the Rockford area's most concentrated occupations includes packaging and filling machine operators and tenders, with a location quotient of 3.12, a sign the region already has a deep bench in exactly this kind of work.
That cuts both ways for job seekers. A large local pool may let PCI be selective for entry roles, but it also means your experience at another packaging or assembly plant is likely to transfer. When a local alderman backed the project in 2025, he noted the apartment-heavy southeast side has a high density of workers for this kind of facility.
If you are coming from a different kind of factory job, it helps to know how the wider sector is moving. Our look at US factory job cuts in June covers the wider manufacturing picture, and our piece on why AI will not save manufacturing jobs looks at automation on the factory floor.
Where Can You Get Help Paying for Training?
If you need a credential before you apply for a technician or maintenance role, start with The Workforce Connection, the region's WIOA provider. It works with local employers, using WIOA funding to offset training costs and upskill workers, so ask whether any of its programs can help you as an individual.
Rockford also has a college pipeline. The chamber's figures show Rock Valley College with 5,762 students. PCI's maintenance posting accepts a two-year technical school in place of experience, so ask the college which of its programs fit.
What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?
This is a real hiring story, but it is a slow build rather than a single hiring day. The two big plants are expected to grow as demand picks up, so openings are likely to keep appearing rather than arrive all at once. The job seekers who do best will be the ones who apply early, get in the door at any level and move up.
Start with the entry roles if you have no pharma background. The warehouse and validation postings ask for basic skills and build in their own training, from forklift licensing to a documentation course. The warehouse training includes cGMP, and cGMP experience is likely to be valued by other pharma and medical device employers too.
Pick your shift on purpose. The weekend posting pays a premium on top of the base, so if you can work weekends, you may earn more than on a shift without it. If you need weekdays, ask for the base rate in writing.
Aim higher if you have technical skills. The IC&V technician posting and the maintenance mechanic posting both start at $24.58 an hour. The IC&V role centers on PLCs and controls, and the maintenance role on keeping packaging lines running. If you are one course short, funded training through The Workforce Connection may help close the gap.
Apply directly and check back often. Go to the PCI careers portal, search Rockford, and check back each week. Because the line operator roles were not listed when we checked, ask local staffing agencies whether they are recruiting for PCI's new lines, since the company itself says many people start as temporary staff.
