Data and archives

Free to reuse with attribution to Metaintro

Every published announcement, all years, one row per event. Column names are stable, and jobs affected are blank where no source states a number.

Methodology & sources

What we count, where it comes from, and how to cite it

What counts as an event

Each row is one announcement by one company. A company that announces more than once gets one row per announcement.

Layoff
A company announces job cuts. Jobs affected is recorded only when a source states a number.
Store closure
A company announces it is closing stores or other locations. The number of stores, and of jobs, is recorded only when a source states it.
Return to office
A company sets an in-office attendance mandate. Jobs affected is included in the reported totals only when a source states a number.

Where events come from

The Metaintro news desk records each announcement from a company statement, a state WARN notice, a regulatory filing, or a major outlet's report. Each row stores the company, the type of action, the announcement date, the locations the source names, and a short neutral summary.

The date is the day the company or a filing first made the action public, not the day the cuts take effect. A row links its primary source and its WARN notice once they are verified, plus any Metaintro coverage of the event, so some rows link only to our coverage. Only published rows appear on the site and in the downloads.

How jobs affected are counted

Jobs affected is filled in only when a source explicitly states a number. We never estimate a figure or infer one from a headline. “Jobs affected (reported)” is the plain sum of those stated numbers, and the monthly and company totals are summed the same way.

“Not stated” means no source disclosed a number, not that no jobs were affected. Those announcements are left out of the sum rather than counted as zero, so totals are a floor and months with large undisclosed cuts read low.

How often it updates

The tracker is updated as announcements are verified. A new or corrected row reaches this page once an editor publishes it, and the “Tracker updated” date shows the latest update among currently published announcements, not the date of a removal.

How to cite

Free to reuse, including the CSV and JSON downloads, with attribution to Metaintro and a link to this page.

Suggested citation

Metaintro, "Metaintro Layoffs Tracker", updated October 2, 2026. https://www.metaintro.com/layoffs

To cite one announcement, link its row on the company page, /layoffs/{company}#event-{id}. Each row's id and company page URL are in the CSV and JSON downloads.

After a layoff

WARN notices, severance, and unemployment basics

What should I do in the first week after a layoff?

Get the details in writing: your last day, final paycheck date, severance terms, and when health coverage ends. File for unemployment with your state as soon as your job ends. Do not sign a severance agreement on the spot; read the release first. Losing employer coverage opens a 60-day window to elect COBRA or enroll in a marketplace plan. Then update your resume and start applying while your network still remembers your last role.

What is a WARN notice?

The federal WARN Act generally requires employers with 100 or more full-time workers to give 60 days of written notice before a plant closing or mass layoff. Several states add their own rules: New York and New Jersey require 90 days, and California covers employers with 75 or more workers. WARN filings are public records, and this tracker links the notice whenever one has been filed.

Am I entitled to severance pay?

In the US, no federal law requires severance. It comes from company policy, your employment contract, or a union agreement. New Jersey is a notable exception for mass layoffs covered by its state WARN law. Severance is usually paid in exchange for releasing legal claims. If you are 40 or older, federal law gives you 21 days to review the agreement (45 days in a group layoff) and 7 days to revoke it after signing.

Can I collect unemployment after a layoff?

Usually, yes. A layoff is a qualifying separation in every state. Apply through your state's unemployment agency right after your last day, because benefits generally start from the week you file. Most states pay up to 26 weeks. Depending on the state, severance pay can delay or reduce your benefits.

How is this tracker built?

Each entry is one company announcement, recorded by the Metaintro news desk with the company, the announcement date, the type of action, and the locations involved. Sources, such as company statements, WARN notices, and filings, are linked on each row once verified, alongside our coverage. Jobs affected are listed only when a source states a number, so the totals are reported figures, not estimates; "Not stated" means no source disclosed one. The full dataset is free to download as JSON or CSV.
